B-Attitudes (The Beautitudes)

Positioning ourselves to hear God and receive direction is of high importance.

What are the Beatitudes in the Bible all about?

A beatitude is defined as supreme blessedness.

Who doesn’t want to be supremely blessed?  These Beatitudes (B-Attitudes) are teachings in which Jesus describes the attitudes and actions that should characterize His followers and disciples.

The Beatitudes are found in this famous “Sermon On The Mount.”  Whether this sermon was preached in one setting or over a course of teachings, it doesn’t matter. There is a call going forth for moral and ethical living.

This sermon is the standard that He is giving for all Christian living.

Can we actually live up to this high standard?  The demands of living this way cannot be met in our own power.  That’s why:

We need the Holy Spirit to produce in us the character of Jesus. Living a yielded life is so necessary.

Jesus positioned Himself on a mountainside as He delivered this message.

The new law, like the old (Exodus 19: 3), was given from the mountain.  Let’s look at the Exodus scripture.  It says, “Moses went up to God and the Lord called to Moses from the mountain.”  Exodus 19: 3

Positioning ourselves to hear God and receive direction is of high importance.

Jesus is ready to deliver His New Testament message.  What position does He take?

He sits down!  It was customary for Jewish Rabbis to be seated while teaching.  Maybe that’s why Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. Perhaps, He’s positioning Himself before the wisdom of His Father, the ultimate teacher.

The implication of a Rabbi sitting down to teach is equivalent to a Pastor standing up to the pulpit.  The position of Him sitting is the queue of the disciples to come sit and listen, for it is time to learn.  Disciples are the students.  If one is given the queue, that one is taking one’s place.  Taking one’s place is being established.  Yes, the disciples were being taught and established.

Not only is positioning ourselves to receive of importance, but our posture of being yielded prepares our hearts to be open.

Posture refers to alignment, while position refers to a specific purpose. Both are needed in fulfilling our Kingdom call.

So, as we embark on this B-Attitude (Beatitude) series, let’s position and posture ourselves (as His disciples) before Jesus, who is our Rabbi, our teacher.
