B-Attitudes (The Beatitudes 7)

Being pure in heart involves having a singleness of heart toward God.

Posted on

Have you ever wondered what being pure in heart looks like?  Our next Beatitude is:   “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”  Matthew 5: 8

Being pure in heart involves having a singleness of heart toward God. A pure heart has no hypocrisy, deceit, or hidden motives.

I love what this commentary said:  The pure in heart is marked by transparency and an uncompromising desire to please God in all things. It is more than an external purity of behavior; it is an internal purity of soul.

Oh, sweet Jesus!  To have an internal purity of soul pleases you.  It comes straight from the pure heart of God.

Those who have a pure heart will not only be blessed, but they will see God and climb higher.  Here’s what Psalm 24 says:

Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?  Who may stand in His holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.  He will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God His Savior.”  Psalm 24: 3-4

This isn’t about mountain climbing but about the right to come before God.  When this Psalm was written, men and women were concerned with what was required of them to be made right with God.

One very famous Preacher named Charles Surgeon said this about Psalm 24: “But ‘clean hands’ would not suffice, unless they were connected with ‘a pure heart.’ True religion is heart-work.” (Spurgeon)

Yes, Christianity is about heart work!  It’s about having a pure heart that’s right before God.  Having a pure heart will lead us to this:

Making every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”  Hebrews 12: 14

In Jesus, we have His holiness, for we do not have any on our own!   Aren’t you grateful for salvation?  We have all we need in life because He, Jesus, is all we need!

One day when we reach our eternal home, we “Will see His face and His name will be on our foreheads.  There will be no more night.  We will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.  And we will reign for ever and ever.”   Revelation 22: 4-5

Yes, being face to face with Jesus will be a glorious day as we hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”  Being pure in heart has great rewards.
