Who doesn’t want to obtain wisdom? I think most of us would like to make better decisions in our lives. I’m sure that a good majority of us have looked back on our lives and have said, “I would have done that differently.”
Looking back for the purpose of reflection is good, but please don’t get stuck there.
Let’s move forward from this stage in our life and attain wisdom, not man’s wisdom, but a supreme wisdom that comes from God.
He’s made it available to us to attain, why wouldn’t we want to listen, and grab hold of it?
Let’s go to His Word and look at Proverbs 1: 1-7, NIV.
“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young–
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance–
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”
Now let’s look at the individual verses and grab hold of what the Holy Spirit is teaching us.
Do you want to attain wisdom and discipline in your life?
Some may want wisdom but when the word discipline is mentioned they’ve already scrolled away.
To receive wisdom, one must exercise discipline as well. They are attached to one another.
Remember in English class a conjunction connects two words. The word “and” is a conjunction.
We are told about fourteen chapters ahead that, “If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding. “Proverbs 15: 32, NLT
Hey, I didn’t say it, God did!
Parents, it is wise to discipline your children. If you don’t you will harm them.
See, already we are getting pointers for young parents. When we listen to correction we will grow in understanding.
That was the segway for our next point.
Growing in understanding will bring words of insight.
God wants to open up our understanding so we can have insight into what He’s saying.
Here’s that word again, (disciplined), as we move along, it must be important, “…For acquiring a disciplined and prudent life…”Proverbs 1: 3
In case some may be asking, “What’s prudent mean?” I had to look it up too.
Prudent is defined as “Being wise, advisable, sensible, cautious and careful.”
One definition said, “Acting with or showing care and thought for the future.”
I like this definition!
Being prudent and disciplined will pave the way for our future.
It seems like being sensible has been lost in this day and age. Not being sensible is being irrational, unrealistic, and unwise.
When we live as prudent and sensible, it will help us to be right, just and fair.
This wisdom and knowledge will bring discretion to even the young.
That’s why we should teach it to our children at a young age.
God is exhorting us to be wise and to listen so we can add this to our learning.
Even if we missed it when we were young, it’s never too late to learn.
Don’t look back in regret but look ahead with hope.
This supreme wisdom will help us to gain understanding, and obtain guidance as we walk in the fear (reverence) of the Lord.
It’s certainly ok to begin once again and leave our foolish ways behind us.
Don’t despise wisdom and discipline, embrace them as one, for the One who won.
Supreme Wisdom Will Guide Our Paths.
