What comes to mind when you see an open door? I see opportunity, an invitation, an entranceway into a new place.
One of the names of Jesus is the door. Here’s what we read in the last chapter of the Bible when the church in Philadelphia, (located in the western region of modern-day Turkey), is being addressed: “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.” Revelation 3: 8
Doors open through obedience.
Remember when Jesus opens the door, no man can shut it. That is comforting, isn’t it? Many have tried to open doors for themselves when it was not a God-appointed door, and it led them through heartache.
We are all familiar with the phrase, “When God closes a door, look for a window.” Where did this quote come from and is it Biblical? The answer is, it is not from the Bible. The meaning of the phrase is that when one opportunity is cut off, another opportunity is made available. That can be true in life! Often times when God is opening another opportunity for us to walk into, He’ll sometimes close a previous door, so we can walk into the new.
New open doors can be a different season.
I remember having two job offers, years ago, and my prayer was, “Lord shut one door so I can know which new door I am to walk through.” He did answer my prayer! Sometimes it’s not that easy and both doors remain open. So we learn to press in and hear God’s voice more clearly.
There are many scriptures about open doors with my favorite one being, “A great door for effective work has opened to me…” 1 Corinthians 16: 9a
Let’s look at the rest of the verse, it says, “And there are many who oppose me.” 1 Corinthians 16: 9b
Doing God’s work will bring opposition.
However, we must hold on to the promise that Jesus is our Door into all that He has for us. He is the entry point. Without Him, we cannot gain entrance. He has said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep… I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 10: 7, 9
What’s finding pasture indicating? One commentary said this, “Jesus described the settled, satisfied life enjoyed by His sheep, those over whom He exercises a shepherd’s care.” (Guzik)
Lord lead us to the pasture! Awe, yes, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul…”Psalm 23: 2-3
I pray that every door of opportunity will be opened for you and when you walk through you’ll hear the voice of the Gentle Shepherd, the Open Door, saying, “This is the way (son or daughter) walk in it.” Isaiah 30: 21 Emphasis added.
