Sometimes in life, we have discussions that need a referee. Hopefully, as adults, we can learn some things about releasing our words before we do need that arbitrator.
As we complete Proverbs 18, our verse begins with this: “He who answers before listening–that is his folly and his shame.” Proverbs 18: 13
I have been guilty of this myself, yes, answering before completely listening. If we are too hasty in answering, we may not understand what the other person is really saying.
Have you ever answered or retorted back to someone, only to find out that your assessment of what they were saying was wrong? It’s quite humbling, isn’t it?
If we use discernment, we will be able to hear what the other is saying.
Acquiring good listening skills should be implemented as we open up our ears to hear, not to hear just with our ears, but to hear with our hearts. Using discernment will produce this.
“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” Proverbs 18: 15
Allow what you heard to be processed through your heart.
In those times of being offended, it’s important to take the time to let the Lord soften the blow.
It’s up to us to yield and allow that offense to be softened in our hearts because, “An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city, and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.” Proverbs 18: 19
There is much power in our tongue. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18: 21
Yes, friends, we acquire a harvest from our words. We get to choose if it’s a good harvest or a bad harvest by the things we say.
The type of fruit we harvest is whether we are speaking life or death. “Be careful what you say and protect your life. A careless talker destroys himself.” Proverbs 13: 3
We are all guilty of this at times.
“From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips, he is satisfied.” Proverbs 18: 20
God delights when we speak with wisdom for it brings forth good things.
We have a good Father, who delights in us reaping good things.
