The next twelve chapters are known to be the Proverbs of Solomon. As we recall, he was the son of David and Bathsheba, who was known for his great wisdom and wealth. His name actually means peace in Hebrew. People came from all over the world to hear his wisdom.
In Proverbs 10, Solomon begins by speaking of a wise son bringing joy to his father, but a foolish one bringing grief to his mother.
Parents you know the truth to this statement.
Children bring joy, but also grief if they are living foolishly.
Solomon then addresses laziness and says, “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Proverbs 10: 4
There is great reward when we walk in integrity and securely. If our path is crooked, we will be found out.
Yep, no hiding from God. He knows all, sees all, and rewards us for walking in His ways.
Not only are our ways in view of God but what comes out of our mouths is very important. We are told, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.” Proverbs 10: 11
Our speech is a source of life-giving wisdom.
Look at how the next couple of verses speak into that:
“Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.” Proverbs 10: 12
Have you ever been in the presence of someone who stirs up things as they speak?
If we walk in the wisdom of God, promoting forgiveness will be on our lips and in our hearts.
If you’re needing to discern a situation, find someone who is wise and ask them for help. Why? “Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning…” Proverbs 10: 13a
How many times has our mouth got us into trouble?
If only we would have not said a word. Can I get an Amen?
This is why James said, “No man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil full of deadly poison.” James 3: 8
It is so important to use our tongue wisely, it can poison someone or bless someone. Blessings and curses should not come from the same mouth.
Remember, men have been made in God’s likeness.
Have you ever thought that our actions affect others too? “He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.” Proverbs 10: 17
If we look at this verse a little deeper, we can understand that our disciplined life can open the door for others to receive life.
If you have been criticized for being “too good,” know that our “goody-two-shoe” Christian ways are opening the door to life for someone.
Isn’t that what our purpose in life is–to walk in His ways and bring others to eternal life? Our ways, our actions, are in full view of others and God.
His Spirit is within us, yearning and longing for those who are being led astray to come to know His love and His purpose for their lives. (Sela)
There’s a lot to digest. Let’s close:
Father, may we be slow to speak and quick to listen. May we honor you in all we say and do, leading the way for others to come and to know you.
Help us to see that you are purifying your sons and daughters to become the pure, spotless bride as you desire, “For the bride has made herself ready.” Revelation 19: 7
Becoming Wise Sons And Daughters Is The Heart Of The Lord For Us.
