You are the Temple of the Holy Spirit

We, as Christians, should value our bodies as a sacred place where God dwells.

The first time I heard someone say as a believer, “You are the temple of the Holy Spirit,” I was totally blown away.  That statement gripped my heart which led me to investigate the verse deeper on my own.  The thought of being “a temple of God” sent chills down my spine.  Suddenly, I felt dirty and not worthy of embracing that truth.

As I grow in the Lord there is such beauty in this truth that Jesus wants us to grab hold of.

As a Christ-follower, we house the living and holy God.

Let’s look at this further as we are challenged with this question:  “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own, you were bought at a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body.”  1 Corinthians 6: 19-20

The beauty and amazing truth I see is that at the very moment when we receive Jesus, as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit resides within us.

When Jesus cleansed the temple, He made this statement:  “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”  John 2: 19

His audience all thought Jesus was referring to the physical temple, but He was not.  He was speaking of his body, which would be destroyed as He was crucified but was raised up three days later.

We, as Christians, should value our bodies as a sacred place where God dwells as the Spirit’s presence and power are within.

The apostle Paul wanted to bring this point home by asking, “What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?  For we are the temple of the living God.  As God has said:  “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”  2 Corinthians 6: 16

It is of high importance that we form no defiling and unholy alliances.

As I close, let me echo what Paul told his followers, “Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7: 1

Thank you for the power of the blood which cleanses and purifies us.

Only because of what you did on the cross Jesus we can be made clean.

It was your sacrifice that took away our sin.  We are your sons and daughters that reflect your holiness.  May we be faithful to that call.
