A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of speaking at The Senior Citizen Center. It was a gathering of elderly men and women eager to come together in devotion and worship of God. Among them were individuals walking with canes, others in wheelchairs, some needing assistance, and a few walking independently. Remarkably, no one’s condition hindered their worship; no one’s circumstance prevented their attendance. They all joyfully raised their voices and sang praises to God.
I witnessed a lady rise to lead the prayer, despite needing to lean on the table for support. An 86-year-old woman earnestly attempted to follow along as I shared a scripture during my talk. When I left, I was so thrilled that I immediately texted my wife about the wonderful experience and how impressed I was by them. This group of seniors demonstrated an unwavering commitment to God. Their pain didn’t impede their worship, their conditions didn’t stifle their praise, and their limitations didn’t deter them from opening their Bibles.
Reflecting on this, I couldn’t help but ponder how we, as healthy and able-bodied individuals, often find excuses to skip church services or neglect prayer and Bible reading. Some may argue that work keeps them busy, but does that separate us from God? Others claim their lives are too hectic, but are we truly too busy for God?
Though my intention was to speak to the seniors and uplift them, little did they know they were the ones inspiring me to never allow anything to come between me and God. I departed with a renewed perspective. As Paul reminds us in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Today, I challenge you to remain steadfast in your devotion to God. When senior citizens, regardless of age or health conditions, eagerly worship God, nothing should hinder us from doing the same.
