She Didn’t Know She Was An Artist

It wasn’t until she was in her thirties that Margie Johnson even called herself a creative. As a child, Johnson said she thought there wasn’t “anything more incredible than to be an artist.” But like so many others, she didn’t believe she had any potential to pursue it.

When she found an art group in Asheville, NC,  the hibernated dream finally surged. On Monday nights, Johnson would travel from Greenville, S.C. to be a part of Matt Tommey’s book study on Unlocking the Heart of the Artist. The book study turned into an artistic family, unlike any other community she’d experienced. “I found my people,” Johnson said. ”I found that I could do things that I thought I couldn’t do.”

Soon, a pastor invited her to paint during a morning worship, and she hasn’t stopped since. Johnson paints regularly for her church as well as other conferences in the area. It’s become her dearest artistic medium as well as a necessary vehicle for quality time with God.

“When I need me-time with the Lord, I crank some worship music and paint,” Johnson says. “It’s a great way to connect [with Him].”

For her, there’s not much difference if the outcome ends up featuring Jesus on the cross or even a secular-seeming landscape. “The Lord has given me a gift, so whatever I paint is from Him,” Johnson explains. “He comes out in what I do.”

This has become the heart of Margie’s mission. Forming a team with her husband Lonnie, the Johnsons strive to unveil the heart of a creative in others. “We’re created in His likeness,” Johnson says. “We all create differently. Some people create with numbers or thoughts. But we believe that we were all born to create. We all have giftings within us.”

In addition to sharing the Gospel of God’s DNA, the Johnsons collectively own and operate their own art company, Our Creative Adventures. Their art studio features work ranging from paintings to Magnolia flower ceramics.
