The arrival of Jesus on earth did not at all resemble our beautiful Christmas card images.
The real memories would include…
slow travel on dusty and crowded streets,
family drama as the news was given, “We have no room for you here.”,
dark, dirty, and cold lodging,
and the pain and travail of birth.
His time on earth continued in this vein with the realities of life in His human suit ever-present.
For this, I am eternally grateful for it demonstrates that God is with us in every way.
God with us in our temptations.
God with us when we fail.
God with us when we are broken.
God with us as we grow.
God with us as we heal.
God with us when we are celebrating.
We do not serve a God who is far off and who does not understand us. He has been tempted in every way and overcame sin and death to bring us home.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus the Son of God — let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.“
Hebrews 4:14-16 CSB
As we celebrate the birth of our beautiful savior remember, no matter what your day may entail,
be it family drama,
logistical difficulties,
travel woes,
loneliness,
sadness,
grief,
pain,
family traditions,
special memories made,
wonder seen through a child’s eye,
surprises under a tree,
or feasts to savor,
God is with you!
Through it all,
today and every day,
now through eternity,
if Jesus is your savior,
you can say,
“Emmanuel,
God is with me!”
