You are a Royal Priesthood

One of the remarkable statements that God says who we are is a royal priesthood.  He says it this way, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…” 1 Peter 2: 9  

This scripture was confirmed in class today by our teacher.  I awakened hearing it, knowing it was the theme for the day.  Let’s look at what it means:  

When we are a chosen generation, as true believers, we have a new life principle within us that is carried out by a new access to God–newer than the Old Testament principles.  

What does that look like from the Old Testament to the New Testament?  The whole body of believers is called a royal priesthood that is called to:

• Reflect the holiness of God and that of their High Priest, which is now Jesus.   
• Offer sacrifices, not like in the Old Testament with animals, but now we are the living sacrifices who have laid down our lives for the cause of Christ.  
• Intercede for man before God.
• Represent God before man.  

Isaiah declared it long ago when he said, “You will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God.”  Isaiah 61: 6  

In this context, the Hebrew word “minister” is to perform the service.  

If we think of royal, we think of a title and an elevated status in life. In fact, the definition of royal is: Having the status of king or queen.  

This calling is not something we earned, it’s something that flows out of a committed life in service to Jesus.   He desires us to carry out the life of being living sacrifices which is our spiritual act of worship. We are instructed to “Not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–His good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12: 2 

As a royal priesthood, we are not to conform to the world.  We have been called out and set apart.
