Why We Worship

Why We Worship

Why worship? Because we need to. And we were made for this purpose. Need help worshiping God? Look back over your life and see what our faithful God has done. When we remember God’s kindness and give thanks, we take the focus off of self and put it on One Who is higher than us. Gratitude is a great incubator for worship and worship brings life back into proper focus. Why we worship is about so much more than giving honor to God, though He deserves all of our praise. What a great God we serve!

Bible Reading of the Day: Psalms 105-107

The Psalmist is providing us with history lessons today of God’s faithfulness and His rescue. He is reminding us today of one of the simplest things we can do to bring joy in our lives—when we do what we were made to do‑worship God. Reading from Psalm 105:1-6

“Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; proclaim his deeds among the peoples. 2 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell about all his wondrous works! 3 Boast in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. 4 Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. 5 Remember the wondrous works he has done, his wonders, and the judgments he has pronounced, 6 you offspring of Abraham his servant, Jacob’s descendants—his chosen ones.”

  • Why is the Psalmist encouraging us to worship the LORD?
  • We need to worship Him! God does not need our praise.
  • Look at the verbs that help us to get into that place of worship that we were made for worshiping our Creator:
  • Give thanks, sing to Him, boast in His Holy Name, Seek Him, and remember what He has done.
  • He is worthy of our praise – but we need to worship Him!
  • We generate worship when we remember what God has done for us.
  • We generate worship when we remember why God did those things for us.

Psalm 105:45

“All this happened so that they might keep his statutes and obey his instructions. Hallelujah!”

All three chapters start with a place of giving thanks to God.

From GotQuestions Commentary

“Why should we worship God? Why is it imperative to worship Him alone, instead of statues or the moon or ourselves? In the end, the “why” of worship is about trust. Whom do we trust? King David wrote of some good reasons to praise and worship God:

(Psalm 146:6–10).

“He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. And the Lord reigns forever”

Scripture of the Day:  Psalm 107:1-2

“1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. 2 Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.”

Application

  • Reminding ourselves of our own history and God’s faithfulness should produce gratitude.
