What Matters Most

What Matters Most

A person’s final words are considered to be one of the most significant. The final moments of one’s life can be when people realize what matters most. For Jesus, the Son of God, there were no regrets, but only an urgency to help those around Him to be able to see what matters most and to be saved.

Bible Reading of the Day: John 17-18

In John 17, Jesus is preparing to lay down His life for all mankind and prepares by praying. First for Himself, then for His disciples, then for all people.

John 17:1-3, “Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent —Jesus Christ.”

This is the meaning of life! We have the answer! It is knowing the only true God and His precious Son, Jesus Christ! Life is meaningless without knowing the One who created life and each one of us. We can become preoccupied and forget what matters most and the point of it all when our focus is on the temporary rather than the eternal.

Scripture of the Day:  John 17:13-19

13 “Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. 14 I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to this world any more than I do. 17 Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. 19 And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.”

What a pure holy heart our Savior has. He came and gave so we could live.

What Matters Most—Knowing God

In John 17:13, Jesus gave us joy. He shared that His goal was that we would have joy – real joy. This is the result of a life hidden in Christ, whose life is centered around what matters. Knowing God.

What Matters Most—God’s Precious Word

In John 17:14, Jesus gave us His word. Jesus tells God in prayer that He has given us His Word. Jesus gave Joy and God’s word.

In John 17:15, Jesus gave us protection. asks God to keep His followers safe from the evil one.

In John 17:17, Jesus gave us His holiness through His truth and word.

What Matters Most—Staying on Mission

Jesus knew His purpose and lived His life on that purpose. Even in the most grueling death and persecution, Jesus stayed on mission. He came in the flesh to live a sinless life on our  behalf and to show us how.

Friends, there are many distractions surrounding us. Live for One. Live faithfully and walk in truth. In Jesus’ words to Pilate, Jesus tells why He was born.

“37 “You are a king then?” Pilate asked. “You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 “What is truth?” said Pilate.”

Truth is not subjective. It is objective and God is the source of truth. We are living in a culture where truth is questioned and people live according to “their” truth. This blinds us to what matters most. Friends, what matters most is knowing God and making Him known. What were you born for? Walk in that purpose and calling and stay on mission.

Application

  • The truth illumines what matters most.
  • Reading God’s word helps us to live intentional lives built on truth for eternity.
