Through the Psalms

His Word is your best guide in the hardest of times.

And do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
For I wait for Your ordinances.

Psalm 119:43 (NASB)

Today’s verse from Psalm 119 is similar to the previous verse, in which the psalmist sought God’s Word to answer those who reproached him. Today’s verse also seeks God’s Word as guidance and strength in a time of trial, but not necessarily from reproach of others. Having said that, Matthew Henry says in his commentary regarding today’s verse, “We have need to pray to God that we may never be afraid or ashamed to own his truths and ways, nor deny him before men,” which is sound advice to all who believe in and love God.

As I see it in times of trials, and I have seen a few, I need spiritual sustenance more than anything. With God as my immovable foundation, I have hope in the darkest of times, knowing that through His Spirit and especially His Holy Word, He will guide me to “my desired haven(Psalm 107:30).

“God is the author of our hopes, and we can most suitably ask Him to fulfill them.” C.H. Spurgeon.

Dear Reader, the Bible you hold in your hand is not mere paper and print – it is the active Word of God your Father. In your trials you call upon God for rescue, and He sends His Holy Spirit into the battle. The Spirit speaks His divine hope to you through His Word – your Guide Book of Life. Brethren, how can you know His Way for you if you are not reading His Word regularly? His Word is your best Guide in the hardest of times. By consuming it often, we can pray these words of Albert Barnes: “Let me not be utterly hopeless; let me be at no time without some evidence that thy word dwells in me with sustaining and sanctifying power.” Amen!
