Those Considered Wise are About to Become Fools

It is in the heart of God to fully reveal Himself. Not only for His love, His mercy, and His compassion – but for His wisdom.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. (Romans 1:22 ESV)

As more corruption and compromise has been exposed in the last two years, there has been an increased hunger for knowledge and the attainment of strategic information. Those considered truth seekers are passionate about pursuing controversies, conspiracies, and any presumed narrative that may lead to hidden treasure and fresh revelation about the true state of the Union and where things are headed.

In an attempt to comprehend a higher purpose behind all the madness, not only are prophetic voices raising a call, but those who don’t even know God are searching for answers. Whether through philosophy, science, political intrigue, or cultural revolution, many honest seekers are looking for a reason for which these many battles have ensued. Surely there is something higher or someone greater that is steering this storyline through all the chaos and leading us to a happy ending!? Many intellectual minds are emerging with their own commentaries of this current warfare and drawing much attention for their philosophical and investigative analysis of the world’s ills.

TODAY’S WISE MEN, SCRIBES, AND DEBATERS

Ben Shapiro is a conservative political commentator that has garnered millions of followers. Being an Orthodox Jew, he is God-fearing and passionate about moral foundations and just laws, even without any personal testimony of faith in Christ. His famous arguments and rebuttals come from his astute intellect as a lawyer and experience as a prolific author. His reputation as a skilled orator and debater is well-known and highly sought after.

Jordan Peterson is a well-known apologist with international recognition. Trained as a clinical psychologist and deeply intellectual in his approach to the world’s problems, he has attracted many to his platforms, including many non-believers. Once claimed to be an atheist, Peterson’s own journey of faith continues to evolve. Though speaking freely to millions in the modern church, he avoids any personal profession of faith in Christ or any ongoing relationship with the Holy Spirit as a foundation for belief.

Russell Brand, though not considered an apologist such as Shapiro or Peterson, is an English comedian and actor, and new-age philosopher at heart. (Interestingly, Brand has interviewed both Shapiro and Peterson). Also drawing millions of followers on his YouTube channel in the last two years, his intellectual pursuits and passionate activism concerning our cultural divisions are drawing attention. His call for mercy and compassion towards our fellow man may be heart-warming and noble but is void of any Christ-centered faith or Holy Spirit connection.

As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would never know Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense. But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength. (1 Corinthians 1:19-25 NLT)

This reference is not meant to shame or disqualify any of these public figures as much as consider their influence through a different filter. They all appear to be authentic seekers of truth who care about people and want to make a difference. They, and all their followers, are asking many of the same questions we are. And yet, without embracing Christ crucified and the power of His resurrection, none of these intellectuals are even close to the realities God has for us. Their insights may bring a measure of truth and understanding, but there is a limit to what they can offer. Apart from the Spirit of Truth and the mind of Christ, they may stir our thinking, but they will never impact eternity. They may challenge our mindsets, but they will be void of any true spiritual power to bring effective change.

WHO HAS THE ANSWERS?

As people who profess Christ, perhaps we should be asking ourselves why we aren’t compelling others to listen to us. Don’t we have the words of life through God’s Word? Don’t we possess the wisdom of the Spirit to rightly discern what is good and what is evil? Don’t we know the One who is Alpha and Omega, who knows the beginning from the end? We have personal access to the very Source and Interpreter of all truth! And yet – what are we doing with it?

Are we speaking with clarity and purpose? Are we asking questions that make people think? Are we digging for ourselves those answers that can only be found in the deep places? Are we willing to take the risk of being misunderstood and misrepresented by challenging the status quo and rattling familiar patterns and mindsets?

The reality is that none of these considered intellectually wise by today’s standards have the answers. If you listen to enough of their broadcasts, you will eventually hear them admitting as such. They aren’t popular because they have all the truth. They draw crowds because they dare to ask the questions. They dare to dig deeper. They dare to confront dangerous ideologies and destructive patterns and offer alternative solutions. People watch them because inside all of us is the longing to ask questions without fear of rejection. These supposed enlightened individuals inspire us to take the risk and confront the opposition.

But why is this important? Why are we drawn to those with seeming insight about our true condition or possible future? Whether it’s prophetic revelations from the Christian community or intellectual enlightenment from the philosophical community, the truth is – we are all hungry to KNOW. Within each one of us, God has placed a hole that can only be filled with eternal realities and eternal truths. God, Himself is so passionate about this, that He has declared that the earth will not only be filled with His glory – but with the knowledge of His glory.

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea (watch the water! Habakkuk 2:14 ESV).

It is in the heart of God to fully reveal Himself. Not only for His love, His mercy, and His compassion – but for His wisdom. Even for His intelligence. He is not some distant Creator that is void of depth or enlightenment. He’s the one who started it all. He is THE source of all intelligence and the true Master of the Universe.

It is this divine intelligence and inspired knowledge from the higher realms that is about to flood the earth. Where Noah saw the earth flooded with water when God decided to end all corruption and start over, we are about to see the earth flooded with a supernatural knowledge of His glory that demonstrates to all there is a God after all. And this God is no fool. He’s actually – extremely smart.

Unlike the artificial intelligence that human minds are pursuing, this divine intelligence of the Holy Spirit comprehends things not only impossible but inconceivable to the human mind. Where human wisdom and intellect are limited to the lower regions, it is only from the higher realms of God’s glory that true wisdom and knowledge are attained.

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:7-8)

It is this reality of His glory that the God of the universe is preparing for us to experience. As we see the intellectual’s debate, the scribes interpret, and the creatives imagine, it is those who know the power of the Spirit through Christ who will actually “get it.” It is those with the faith of a child and a pure heart positioned in Christ who will have access to the true wisdom and understanding needed to bring breakthrough and freedom.

Rather than being intimidated by man’s wisdom, we must remember that we’ve been given the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). We’ve been given all access to the treasures from the deep if we dare go there. Not only can we know His heart, but we can also think His thoughts. Better still, we’ve been given the power of His Spirit to know what to do with them.

Keep pursuing truth, but do so from the right source. Man’s wisdom may take us to the moon, but God’s wisdom reveals His glory that stretches through all eternity.
