The Work of the Holy Spirit

He is our rescuer in the storm.

Posted on

How could we ever survive life without the Holy Spirit?  The longer I am a Christian, the more I have come to understand and appreciate Holy Spirit’s work in my life.  Without Him, I don’t think I could survive.  God loves when we camp out with Him.

Who is Holy Spirit to you?  He is first and foremost part of the Godhead, the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  He is my friend, as Jesus is my friend.

Jesus told His disciples before He left the earth, “Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go I will send Him to you.”  (John 16: 7)

  • He is our Counselor sent to us.

Here’s what He will do, “When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin, and in regard to righteousness, and in regard to judgment.”  (John 16: 9-11)

  • He brings conviction, righteousness (right-standing with God), and judgment.

Jesus also said, “When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”  (John 16: 13)

  • He brings Truth and discerns error.

He reassured His disciples, “He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you.”  (John 16: 14)

  • He brings glory to Jesus and revelation to us.

Jesus tells His friends of the grief they will have when He goes away, yet He sees that “No one will take away your joy.”  (John 16: 22)

  • Even in a time of grief, He brings joy, everlasting joy.

Only, “In Jesus, you may have peace.”  (John 16: 33)

  • He releases supernatural peace.

When life is overwhelming, Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  (John 16: 33)

  • We overcome as Jesus overcame.
  • What He completed, we now receive.  (Shared from John 16: 4-33, Modified)

Holy Spirit Is Part Of God’s Fullness

The Psalmist, we see, is saying, “Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!”  (Psalm 81: 1)

  • Walking in His fullness will bring forth praise to Him.

Here’s what else God does, “I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket.”  (Psalm 81: 6)

  •  He is our burden-bearer.

He helps us in our distress, “In your distress, you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thunder cloud.”  (Palm 81: 7)

  • He is our rescuer in the storm.

God delights when we listen and obey.  “If my people would listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways, how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn against their foes.”  (Psalm 81: 13-14)

  • Obedience brings forth victories.  (Shared from Psalm 81, Modified)

He Started Strong And Committed, Ended Weak And Foolish

Who am I talking about?  Joash, now the King of Judah, after his father, Ahaziah, died.  He was only seven when he was anointed king.  Yikes!  What can a seven-year-old rule?  Maybe Legos or children’s building blocks.  Yet, the Bible says this, “He did right in the eyes of the Lord while Jehoiada, the priest, was living.”  (2 Chronicles 24: 2)  I’m sure this priest mentored him.

Joash decided to restore the temple.  He collected the taxes by placing a man-made chest outside at the gate of the temple.  Week after week, they would collect money as the people gave.

All was going well until Jehoiada passed away, then everything changed.

  • God brings Godly mentors into our lives to impact us with their teaching forever.
  • If our season ends with a mentor, what they imparted and taught should not end.

The place of worship, the beautiful temple, Solomon built was abandoned.  “They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols.”  (2 Chronicles 24: 18)

  • We were created for abandoned worship, not to abandon our worship.
  • A commitment to the Lord is to abandoned faith, not to abandon our faith.

God sends a prophet to speak to Joash, and, “The Spirit of God came upon Zechariah, son of Jehoiada, the priest.  He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says:  “Why do you disobey the Lord’s command?   You will not prosper, because you have forsaken the Lord, He has forsaken you.  (2 Chronicles 24: 20)  Did they listen to the words and warnings from God?  Nope!

“So they plotted against him and by order of the king, they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.”  (2 Chronicles 20: 21)

  • Abandoned faith may cost a life, but life in Him is never really lost.  We’ve been found!

Joash reaped what he sowed.  The Arameans killed him while he slept.

It’s sad to think that this king once defined as doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord, was then defined as wicked.

Thank you Holy Spirit for your work in our life.  Thank you that you are alive and active in every area of our lives.  You alert, reveal, protect, empower, and direct, as we follow you, as we follow the Lord who leads and guides, as we honor our God. Help us to trust, and yield to you more.
