The Word Of Knowledge

God is always looking to reconnect His people back to Him.

I love the word of knowledge!  Some may ask what is this?  It’s knowledge about something that you have no previous knowledge about!  It’s a supernatural download from the Lord.  We see that demonstrated in the life of Jesus while here on the earth.

He is sitting with His disciples at the Last Supper and He says to them, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.”  (Acts 13: 21)

  • Word of knowledge comes from the Truth from the Spirit of God.

His disciples are puzzled wondering what He is saying.  Simon Peter motions to John saying, “Ask Him which one He means!”  (John 13: 24)  “He leans back against Jesus and asks, “Lord, who is it?”  (John 13: 25)  “Jesus answers, It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.  Then dipping the piece of bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.  As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered him.”  (John 13: 26-27)

Every time I read this, I ask, how could Judas do that?  How could he betray him like that?  The part that makes it harder for me to understand is that some theologians have said that Judas was, most likely, sitting in the seat of honor.  The seat of honor is the place right next to the host. Jesus is hosting this dinner, the Passover meal.  The honored guest seat would be to the left of Him.  This is the place Judas was positioned.  Jesus gave Judas the best seat in the house.

  • Judas was given a position of honor, and he gave Jesus a position of betrayal.
  • Disciples are given a position of honor; seated with Him and for Him.

Tradition would say, that the host gives the honored guest a portion of what they were eating.  It’s kind of like scooping the first portion of food out, to one at your table, as you all sit down to eat the meal.

As soon as Judas took the bread he went out.  Scripture then says, “And it was night.”  (John 13: 30)  Yes, darkness set in–into Judas’s soul.

Jesus, after Judas was gone, starts telling them about, “A new command I give you:  Love one another, as I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”  (John 13: 35)

Here comes the Word of Knowledge again when Peter asks, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now?  I will lay down my life for you.  Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me?  I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!”  (John 13: 38)

We can say that Jesus is God, yes.  He knows the past, present, and future in our lives  This is true.  The word of knowledge is still operating today in the lives of God’s children who are gifted in perception. It’s part of the revelatory gifts:  Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, and Prophecy. “For to one is given by the Spirit, the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.”  (1 Corinthians 12: 8)

There are several examples in the Old and New Testaments of Words of Knowledge.

Paul did teach, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be uninformed.”  (1 Corinthians 12: 1)  There are various gifts, but the same Spirit, and there are a variety of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

God empowers us with gifts, to release His mercy.

When we share a word of knowledge with people, they are amazed how God would personally care about their situation.  He shares it, so He can release His mercy or help in that situation.  If someone walks up to you and encourages you with something you are struggling with, that no one knew about, but you and God, it could make you become a believer!

How often His people rebel, “Yet He was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times He held back his anger and did not unleash his fury!”  (Psalm 78: 38)

God is always looking to reconnect His people back to Him.

God judges and gives the verdict.

Jehoshaphat “Appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah.  He told them, “Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for man, but for the Lord, who is with you wherever you give a verdict .  Let the fear of the Lord be upon you.  Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.  (2 Chronicles 19: 5-7)

The last word of wisdom Jehoshaphat gave to those in Jerusalem was “Act with courage, and may the Lord be with those who do well.”  (2 Chronicles 19: 11)

Words of wisdom and words of knowledge sometimes are released together.  The next time you’re in a conversation with another believer, pay attention to their words, God may use them to speak wisdom into a situation that just you and God know about.  Holy Spirit loves to highlight specific words for us.  A random comment from another with the Holy Spirit’s anointing on it can come as an answer from God, through a word of knowledge.

  • God is longing to connect with His children who are disconnected, or who don’t even know they are His children, yet!
  • God uses the word of knowledge to bring forth that connection.

Practice this with a stranger.  Ask God to give you something specific for a stranger, and watch their eyes open wide and their mouths drop to their navel.  Then ask if you can pray with them about this situation and see their tears stream down their face, as the Holy Spirit is grabbing hold of their heart and their lives.  People are looking for answers!  The God we love and serve has all of their answers, and more!
