The Prophetess Sings

God’s great power was displayed that day.

Feeling like she is standing on top of the mountain, the prophetess, Mariam, sings.  Why is she so thankful?  For the Lord’s victory over Pharaoh’s army was won.  God’s great power was displayed that day.

Can you even imagine what it felt like walking through the Red Sea on dry ground with a wall of water all around you?  After that, the people put their trust in the Lord and in their leader. I would think so!  Seeing the miracle-working power of God does that every time!  It puts a song of thankfulness in our heart and a kick in our step.

Miriam, Moses, and Aaron, her brother, sang to the Lord. Miriam took the tambourine in her hand, danced and they praised God saying, “Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand,  O Lord, shattered the enemy.  In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed.  In YOUR strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.” (Exodus 15: 6, 13)  All of this occurred by the power of God’s arm, then more testing began.

The Israelites cross over the Red Sea, watch the Egyptian army be destroyed by the water crashing down upon them, and they continue on their journey.  “For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.”  (Exodus 15: 22)   So they grumbled against Moses and he cries out to God and “The Lord showed him a piece of wood.  He throws it into the bitter water (at Mirah), and the water became sweet.”  (Exodus 15: 25)

  • God takes those bitter things in our life and makes them sweet.
  • What was once off-limits, is now without limits.

That piece of wood thrown into the water was a foreshadow of the cross that Jesus would be placed upon one day.  His death was definitely bitter-sweet.

Life is a series of tests that God throws at us.  Our response, in those tests, is of utmost importance to God.  Our character is right alongside that importance to Him.  We are warned of being foolish.  We are told, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven things that are detestable to Him.”  (Proverbs 6: 16)  Hate is a pretty strong word for God to use. Here’s  what those things are:

  • Haughty eyes.
  • Lying tongue
  • Hands that shed innocent blood.
  • A heart that devises wicked schemes.
  • Feet that are quick to rush into evil.
  • A false witness who pours out lies.
  • A man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

In summary, don’t play with fire you’ll get burned.  “Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?”  (Proverbs 6: 28)  The only fire we are called to is the fire of the Holy Spirit.

We all have been burned or damaged by the effects of sin. Choosing to grow in our faith will require us to make some different decisions.  Those good choices are not for us to be restricted in having fun, but God puts them in place to better us, to make us more like Jesus. We need the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives!  With each test, He’s working on our hearts and on our character.  We have the potential to be in that Hall of Faith, not Hall of Fame, we read about.

Let His commands be a lamp and a light.  All of the heroes of faith we see, “Were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.  God had planned something (better for us) so that only together with us, would they be made perfect.”  (Hebrews 11: 39-40)  Not all the heroes of faith experienced immediate triumph over their circumstances, but ALL were blessed by God.  No matter what happens in our life, as a believer, we are ALL blessed by God.

This faith chapter is like a final plea for preserving faith.  The fulfillment of God’s promises to them has now come in Jesus Christ, and their redemption too is now complete in Him. We are made perfect IN Him.

(Exodus 15, Proverbs 6: 1-7: 5, Hebrews 11: 23-40, Modified)
