The Only Source of Wisdom

All true wisdom comes from God through His prophets, Word, and ministers.

For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6 (NASB)

When we need to know a skill, for work or for pleasure, we seek the help of someone with the appropriate knowledge. I remember the men who taught me how to play chess; I sought them out because of their reputable knowledge of the royal game, and I learned much from them. But seeking wisdom is not like learning to play chess or anything else; wisdom is of the mind and soul. It can’t be found in books or from the teaching of any person. Albert Barnes says that “people do not gain wisdom by any efforts of their own, but God gives it according to the laws of His goodness.”

We know from previous verses that the fear (reverence) of God is the foundation of wisdom; that is because He alone is the source from which we attain wisdom. As the hymn says, He is “immortal, invisible, God only wise” – there is no other source of divine wisdom. The Lord’s brother James, writes in his epistle that we can ask God for wisdom, and He will not withold it. All true wisdom comes from God through His prophets, Word, and ministers.

Dear Reader, beware of the many false sources of wisdom that this world offers – they are not the real thing. Seek the only true source of wisdom, Almighty God – only He can lead you into a glorious eternity in Heaven.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!
Romans 11:33
