The Immutability of God

There was never a time when He was not, and there will never come a time when He will cease to be. All that He is now is all that He’s ever been.

“The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior. My God is my rock. I can run to Him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender.” – Psalms 18:2, NCV

Psalm 18 was David’s song of victory when the Lord saved him from the hands of his enemies. He found such a reliable defender in God that, in verse 2, he compared Him to a rock.

Like a rock which remains sturdy and immovable despite the fluctuating state of the ocean that surrounds it, is our God who is IMMUTABLE while all creations are subject to change. God is perpetually the same. He cannot change in His nature and being, character and attributes, purpose and promises.

GOD IS IMMUTABLE IN HIS NATURE AND BEING. He is God forever; there was never a time when He was not, and there will never come a time when He will cease to be. All that He is now is all that He’s ever been and all He will ever be. Unlike any other creatures, He cannot grow, evolve, or improve. As what Arthur W. Pink said in his book about divine attributes, “God cannot change for the better, for He is already perfect; and being perfect, He cannot change for the worse.”

GOD IS IMMUTABLE IN HIS CHARACTER AND ATTRIBUTES. The attributes of God are the very perfections of His being. Whatever they were even before the creation of the universe, they are precisely the same now and will remain so forever. They will continue to be unchanged, undiminished, and unsullied for all eternity.

GOD IS IMMUTABLE IN HIS PURPOSE AND PROMISES. He is both omniscient and omnipotent—all-knowing and all-powerful. He knows all things, and He can do all things! Having these exceptional attributes, there can never be a need for any revision in His decrees. His will shall never vary. His purpose shall never alter. His promises shall never change.

In God, change is impossible. In men, change is inevitable. Like wild waves of troubled seas, we are restless. Like empty clouds blown along by the wind, we are unstable. Our favorites when we were younger may have already changed now that we have gotten older. People who like us today may hate us tomorrow.

“However unstable we may be, however fickle our friends may prove, GOD CHANGES NOT.” — A.W. Pink

Therefore, we must not put our trust in men. Our faith and trust must be in God alone, who is Lord forever and ever. He is a Mighty Rock where we can fix our feet while the raging torrents of our troubled seas sweep away everything that is around us. In Him, we are safe and we’ll not be shaken.

GOD DOES NOT COMPROMISE. His will is fixed. He can never be persuaded to alter His Word. And He can never be sweet-talked into answering selfish prayers. At this point, some of you might ask, “What’s the use of praying to the One whose will is already fixed?” Answer: The Lord requires us to do so; to pray, to seek for the blessings which He has promised to bestow us. He wills everything that is good for us, and He’ll never give us anything contrary to His will.

The Lord changes not; men do. In all our efforts to seek God, to know Him, to please Him, to be with Him, we must bear in mind that all change must be on our part. And CHANGE — it works for the children of God, not against them. It is actually the working of the Holy Spirit so that we may be transformed to be more and more like Jesus Christ. Now that’s an awesome kind of a change! ❤️

“So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord — who is the Spirit — makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.” 2 Corinthians 3:18, NLT
