The Hurricane Winds of Change

Our place of shelter is to stand in the presence of God, where His faithfulness and goodness are made known.

Seasons of history can be like the eye of a hurricane. We might be born into a generation of relative peace and tranquility and assume that space of stability will last forever. What we forget is that history, like hurricanes, moves across time. Neither hurricanes nor history is static. While we can guess the track a hurricane or history might take from research and prediction models, it is not an exact science.

When history begins to move out from the eye of a period of relative calm toward the wall of a hurricane-like period of transition, disruption takes place. The wind increases. Life is tossed about. People get nervous. Fear arises, and love grows cold. When the hurricane winds of change begin to blow, we must reaffirm our understanding that God is the author of our future, not the winds of change, fate, luck, or even our good works.

We are exiting a generational eye of history. The signaling winds we felt in the last two-plus years were an announcement of a historical change in the direction of the winds of history. While to some, these winds of change are announcing a significant social shift, something of greater significance is taking place. This will be a time of unusual opportunity for the Church. While there will be disruptive winds of social change, even dramatic change within the Church, the wind of God’s presence will overshadow the devastation these winds of change will produce.

When a natural storm approaches, we are advised to take shelter. This is a time to take shelter spiritually. David wrote, “How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you have performed for those who take refuge in you, before the sons of mankind! You hide them in the secret place of your presence from the conspiracies of mankind; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues” (Psalm 30: 19-20).

Our place of shelter is to stand in the presence of God, where His faithfulness and goodness are made known. Just as the Lord closed the door on the ark Noah built, so it will be for those who seek shelter in His presence. As the wall of the coming social hurricane intensifies its destructive rotation, we will be safe from the fear that would have robbed us of our peace had we not sought shelter in the presence of the Lord.
