Abraham finds himself looking for a field to bury Sarah, his wife, after her death. He bows down to the people (Hittites) and to the owner of the land requesting to buy a small portion, and a cave at the end of the field. In their bargaining, Abraham buys the field so he could have a place to bury his wife in the land of Canaan. His urgency to do so was indicating his unswerving commitment to the Lord’s promise that Canaan was his new homeland. In that culture, people were usually buried in their native land. Abraham’s lot, the gifted field, was granted to him, even if the price he paid for it was way too high.
Interestingly, in the book of Psalms, David reminds us that God bestows on his people, in the promised land, the gift of the fields also, when he stated: “Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” (Psalm 16: 5-6)
What field of influence are you assigned to? What path of life has God made known to you? We are told that “We are God’s field, God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3: 9) We are co-workers with God, God’s cultivated garden, the house He is building. It’s time to look to the fields, It’s time to do more than just look in their direction. It’s time to go! Our God is a God of the more.
We have an example of a Godly servant-hearted woman who said, “Let me go out into the harvest fields…So Ruth went…And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz…” (Ruth 2: 2-3)
Boaz and Jesus are the owners of their fields. Jesus is in the fields waiting for us to come join him, as His co-laborers, who have been assigned and given the fields, as a gift. Our field of influence is awaiting Kingdom building.
