The Eternity of God

God is able to see the future, not because He can foresee it but because He has already lived in it—just as He is living in the present, just as He has lived in the past.

“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” Psalm 90:2b, NIV

Do you know that when you try to look for terms synonymous to the noun form of the word “everlasting,” dictionaries will give you words such as Almighty, Creator, Father, God, Jehovah, Lord, Supreme Being, and Yahweh? Capitalized, yes! I love how it actually implies that only God can be everlasting or eternal.

Psalm 90 was Moses’s prayer sometime during their journey to the promised land, and it lauds the eternity of the Lord. In my previous article, I shared about the self-existent God who has always been God even ‘before the mountains were born and the whole world was brought forth.’

This week, I’m going to share about the same eternal God who remains and will always remain to be God ‘from everlasting to everlasting.’ Here are other versions of Psalm 90:2…

“Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God” (KJV)

“You were eternally God, and will be God forever” (GNB)

“From beginning to end, You are God” (NLT)

“You are God. You have always been, and You will always be” (NCV)

ETERNITY is an attribute of God that refers to His timeless nature — having no beginning and no end, no past and no future. Unlike finite created beings such as us, He doesn’t experience the succession of moments and events we call time.

THE EVERLASTING NOW. God is able to see the future, not because He can foresee it but because He has already lived in it—just as He is living in the present, just as He has lived in the past. He sees all time and all events clearly and simultaneously, all in one view. For Him, the past, the present, and the future are an everlasting now.

I realize how the concept of the ‘everlasting now’ is really challenging to grasp. Remember, we should pray for faith, not intellect, so we can understand better. C.S. Lewis’s illustration can help: he instructed that we imagine a piece of paper extended infinitely in all directions. Using a pencil, draw a short line anywhere on that paper. The paper represents the eternity of God while the short line represents time. Just as that line begins and ends on the infinite piece of paper so as time has its beginning and ending in God.

THE ULTIMATE TIMEKEEPER. It’s just so comforting to think that all the days of our lives are held by the ultimate Timekeeper. God is an eternal God; therefore, it must follow that His love, His mercy, His grace, His faithfulness, His goodness, and all of His attributes are eternal as well. We don’t really have to worry about what the future holds; we just have to know and trust the One who holds it.

Sometimes, though, we forget that our years are nothing but a short dashed line compared to the infinite expanse of God’s eternity. We make ourselves busy fulfilling our earthly goals and dreams that we forget that we are actually made for eternity just as we are made for time. As we live the short years of our lives, may our prayer be like that of Moses’s:

AN EVERLASTING LIFE. Out of eternity, the Lord came into time as Jesus Christ— clothed in humanity to save humanity. The ‘wise’ thing we must do is to make it our #UltimateLifeGoal to have our lives fully surrendered to our Savior so that by the time we have to stand in the face God, we may be able to claim His promised gift that extends beyond the boundaries of time— an everlasting life. ❤️

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16, KJV)
