The Cost Of Following

When we spend time with Jesus, revelation, and wisdom comes straight from the Holy Spirit.

Does following Jesus have a cost attached to it?  Yes, but He is worth everything.  Persecution is a real thing, especially for Christians in other nations.  We think if someone shuns us, makes fun of us, or laughs at us, that it is persecution.  It is very small compared to one who has been martyred for their faith.  We are blessed for our religious freedom.

Peter and John will learn about persecution.  “While they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard, along with the Sadducees, were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.”  (Acts 4: 2)

The Sadducees were a Jewish sect who controlled the temple.  They wanted to control the people too.  After Peter and John were speaking of the resurrection, they were put in jail.  However, “Many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.”  (Acts 4: 4)  That’s a good day for a preacher!  A lot of altar workers would be needed for that number.  Get ready church, I believe we will see that type of volume!

The next day, after spending a night in the slammer, here comes the questioning for Peter and John.  “By what power or what name did you do this?  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them:  Rulers and elders of the people!  If we are being called to account for an act of kindness shown to a cripple, and are asked how he was healed, then know this, “It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth…” (Acts 4: 7-10)  He continues his message testifying of the risen Lord.

  • When the Holy Spirit is speaking through you, a supernatural boldness and courage will be seen and heard.

I love how the Holy Spirit speaks this Truth through Peter, saying, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”  (Acts 4: 12)

The council did not want them to speak in Jesus’ name anymore.    They could not stop them for all the people were praising God for what just took place.  “All could see the man (beggar) standing there with them, so there was nothing they could say.”  (Acts 4: 14)

  • The validity of a true miracle will speak for itself.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John, and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”  (Acts 4: 13)

  • When we spend time with Jesus, revelation, and wisdom comes straight from the Holy Spirit.

His presence in our lives will become evident to all.  How?  We reflect His image, not ours.

No matter what the cost of suffering, Job said this:  “I know I will be vindicated. Can anyone bring charges against me?  If so, I will be silent and die.”  (Job 13: 18-19)

Peter and John were about to have charges brought against them, but they spoke in the power of the Holy Spirit.  They didn’t back down to what they had been called to do:  Witness about Jesus.

In the Old Testament, they didn’t mess around, a false witness was put to death.  (Deuteronomy 19: 15-20)  In our witnessing, “The Lord your God is the one who goes before you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”  (Deuteronomy 20: 4)

  • Let Him fight your battles.
  •   You go to a place of prayer and worship, then watch God work.

He’s worth the cost.  Reflecting His character is the best witness we can be.  We will know when there is a time to speak, and a time to listen.  We’ll know when.

(Acts 4: 1-22, Job 13, Deuteronomy 19-20, Paraphrased)
