Rest And Life In The Spirit

When we are called to go, go in God’s strength and grace.

Where do we go for rest?  I could sit and look at this scenery all day and find a place of rest.  There’s only one place that we can find total rest, in God alone and life in the Holy Spirit, our comforter, friend, and power.

Our soul is the place where we feel unrest, at times.  It holds our mind, will, and emotions.  Those three things are part of our “make up” which we all know, get us in trouble.

This is why we need the Holy Spirit to infuse our human spirit. We must let Holy Spirit impart His peace and rest to us.  Then we will say, as the Psalmist said, “My soul finds rest in God alone.”  (Psalm 62: 1a)  He alone is my rock, I will never be shaken.  He is my fortress, He alone is solid as a rock. Cling to Him.

  • He’s where we get our strength and love from.  “One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard:  that you, O God, are strong and that you, O Lord are loving.”  (Psalm 62: 11-12)
  • His strength and love flow through the Spirit of God, to us, and through us.  (Taken from Psalm 62, Paraphrased)

Life through the Spirit is the way God wants us to live.  It is because of the Spirit, “The law of the Spirit of life” is in us and has set us free.”  The law was powerless, but the Spirit IS power.  We need that power to overcome.  I can’t imagine life without the Holy Spirit!

How do we do that?  “Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.”  (Romans 7: 6)

  • Learn to walk in the Spirit by yielding to living like Jesus.

Every day we have choices before us.  Choose what Jesus would do and you will be strengthened in your inner man.

If the Spirit of God lives in you, He will speak to you.  He will show you what to choose, where to go, and where not to go. Let Him lead and guide you.

In all things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”  (Romans 8: 37)

Rest comes when we are yielded.  The turmoil leaves and the Spirit rules and reigns.  The life of being yielded and surrendered becomes a life of overcoming.  (Taken from Romans 8, Paraphrased)

David sees that His God overcomes. He is going back and forth from Saul’s house, as his servant, to tend his father’s sheep.  One day he is prompted by his father to go to the battlelines and as he arrives, “As the army was going to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.”  (1 Samuel 17: 20)

Both armies are lined up at this point, face to face.  Goliath, the nine-foot giant of a man, sees David and steps out of line toward him.  All the other men run from him in great fear.

David’s older brother, Eliab, sees him and asks him, “Why have you come down here?”  (1 Samuel 17: 28-29)  David responds like any other little brother saying, “Now what have I done?”  (1 Samuel 17: 29)

King Saul is then called in and David asks for Saul’s permission to go after Goliath. Saul refuses at first saying you are only a boy.  David tells him that he had killed a lion and a bear with his own hands.  He declares, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the Philistine.”  (1 Samuel 17: 37)

Saul then says, “Go and the Lord be with you.”  (1 Samuel 17: 37)

  • What God has called us to go after, even if you’re afraid, go after!

Saul helps him dress for the battle. David takes five smooth stones from the stream, puts them in his shepherd’s bag pouch, takes his sling in hand, and approaches the giant.  The number five means grace.

  • When we are called to go, go in God’s strength and grace.

David looks straight in the eyes of this giant and says, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel!”  (1 Samuel 17: 45)

  • We go in the name of the Lord.
  • We come against that “thing” in the name of the Lord.

There’s power in the name!

David did not hesitate, he runs quickly toward the battle line to meet his enemy.  He takes out his grace stone and slings one right into his forehead and Goliath fell facedown.  Why didn’t he fall backward?

  • It is only by grace we are saved.
  • At the name of Jesus, every man will bow down.

Living life in the Spirit will bring us face to face confronting many enemies, spiritual enemies, but we must face them and take them down.  No longer do they have any authority over us.

God is calling us to a place of knowing who we are IN HIM.  It’s  “Not by strength nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of All.”  (Zechariah 4: 6)  This is a place of rest.  (Taken from 1 Samuel 17: 1-54, Paraphrased)
