Respond—Don’t React!

We can choose to react with anger or fear or faith.

We’re living in unchartered territory
We have never been here before-
The world finds itself in limbo
Will there be peace or famine or war?

Just when we feel like we’re doing okay
Like maybe we’ll survive this disaster
Some more bad news comes down the line
And our hearts start beating faster.

Everything is affected—body, mind, and soul
What, oh, what does the future hold?
How can we really sit calmly at home
Aware of the things we’ve been told?

Maybe we need to destroy the TV
Or just unsubscribe from the cable
Maybe it’s time to get out The Book
And remember that God is able!

The “news” we hear is suspicious
We must take it with a grain of salt
And try to decide what’s real—what’s not
And if not, then who’s at fault?

The real problem at the root of our stress
The thing we, as Christians, must really address
Is how we react to the daily recitation
Of the latest bad news to threaten our nation!

When we hear the news we have a choice
And perhaps a chance to share our voice
We can choose to react with anger or fear
Or in faith, respond, with a message that’s clear.

The devil has a plot that’s sinister and vile
If we give him an inch, he’ll take a mile
So don’t give up territory you’ve gained
Remember your scroll that the Lord has ordained!

God hasn’t given us a “spirit” of fear
But of power, love — a strong mind—
Time to put on those big warrior boots*
And kick that old devil’s behind!!!

*For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:5 NASB
