Many times, we can look at our lives and think, “How did we get here? This isn’t how it was supposed to be; this isn’t how life was supposed to turn out.” We had dreams and plans and hopes. Somewhere along the way, life got away from us, and what we thought was supposed to happen didn’t pan out.

This is what happened to the nation of Israel. God had promised them something. They hoped and dreamed of it coming to pass, but when they looked around, it seemed impossible. They were torn from their homeland. They were beaten and broken, living among their enemies. How had God’s chosen people ended up like this? How have you, a child of God, ended up like this?

In Ezekiel 37, God took the prophet Ezekiel to the valley of dry bones and asked him a question. This valley of the bones was a symbol of the nation of Israel. The people who were once thought to be the mightiest nation now lay waste in the desert forgotten. “Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezek. 37:3a).

Look out at your life and what it was supposed to be and ask yourself the same question: Can that dream live? Oh, how we hope to say yes, but much like Ezekiel looking out over those dry bones in the desert, we can’t see how they would. In that situation, his answer was one of great wisdom. He said, “Only you know, Lord” (Ezek. 37:3b).

The Lord then instructed Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones. Not only did they have flesh and breath brought back to them, but the Lord poured out His Spirit on them. They were restored to their land like it was supposed to be all along (Ezek. 37: 4-14).

When you look at your life and it seems to have passed you by and hope has been lost, it is not up to us to figure out how to get it back on track. If we knew how to do that, we would have done it already. We must go to God and say, “Only you know, Lord, how to fix this” and wait for Him to tell us what to do. He is the one who knows how to bring dead things back to life and restores that which was once thought lost to its rightful place.

It doesn’t matter what we have done or what our past looks like. All things can be restored, and all things can be new. The Bible says He makes all things new, and we are a new creation in Christ Jesus. Don’t let anything in your past hold you back.

Now you could be saying to yourself, “Well, if He can do it, why doesn’t He just do it?” That is a good question, and the answer can also be found in Ezekiel 37. When God told Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones, do you think the bones didn’t hear Him as well? If I were to ask you to say to the person next to you to hand me something, do you think they would wait for you to hand it to me or give it to me once they heard me ask for it? Most likely, it would be the latter.

The bones only moved when Ezekiel told them to, and this is because God has made us co-laborers with Him. He wants to work through us and not just bypass us to do what He wants. He has given us the power of life and death in our mouths. He can fix your situation for you and just set you in it, but He loves to work with you to do the impossible.

It takes us looking to God for instructions and not trying to fix things on our own. If self could help, it would. No matter what it looks like or how long those dreams have been dead, He will show you how to make the impossible possible. He knows the plans He has for you, and they are plans to prosper you and not to harm you. You know you were made for greater things than this; you know there is more to life than what you see right now. Don’t let the world trick you into believing it is too late or that it can’t be done. With God, all things are possible.
