Rooted in Christianity: A Book of Poems

What you see in the title of Mike Wahl’s Rooted in Christianity is what you get in the poems: a probing and a celebration of the author’s Christian faith—self-examination and humility; failure, sin, confession; total dependence on grace; steadfast choice, vigilance against temptation and evil; trust and perseverance through hardship and suffering; hope even when it is a frayed rope by which one climbs a steep cliff “with no hand-holds”;  the joy of a toddling grandchild; a firm belief that God will make a new heaven and a new earth in ways human reason cannot calculate.

But within that life of faith, the poems revel in language and celebrate its richness and grace. Truth is not a walk to the store to purchase a theological package, but a disciplined dance that the poems mirror, with sound and sense in poem after poem circling, spinning, repeating a pattern—measured cadence, end rhyme, beginning rhyme, internal rhyme, refrain—before all comes to rest and the “words circle to unity.” Though the poet sees his linguistic creations as meager in comparison to God’s creation, he clearly loves his task. He is playful and self-ironic, even as his message is serious.

—Harry Moore, author of the collection Bearing the Farm Away (Kelsay Books) and four chapbooks—most recently Beyond Paradise: The Unweeded Garden (Main Street Rag). For sampling the poems and for purchase, see his website: www.harryvmoore.com.

Mike Wahl lives on and operates an organic farming and gardening operation in northern Alabama.  There, attempts to remove the weeds, rocks, and sins from his life present significant obstacles. Though they offer full-time distractions that seemingly never end, they nurture insights that encourage recognition of promised blessings and emphasize the curses incurred by Adam’s fall from grace.  Mike’s marriage of 45 years entwines God as the third strand of cord to provide the strength capable of defying the burdens of this decadent world.  Mike’s first chapbook of poems, “Living Adverbially,” was published in March 2020 by Finishing Line Press and is available from them or from Kingdom Winds.com.
