This is one of my favorite names of Jesus, Prince of Peace. Why? His peace is a weapon that keeps us calm and tranquil like a still body of water overlooking the sunrise about to shine upon the earth.
The actual word, peace, means tranquility and freedom from disturbance. When we are rattled, we are definitely disturbed. Peace is very important for our well-being.
In biblical days, a common phrase used to greet one another was, “Peace Be With You.” Jesus stressed this point when He said, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14: 27
Did you catch that? Peace is a gift!
Jesus was speaking to His disciples to comfort them and prepare them for the promised Holy Spirit before He left planet earth. The Holy Spirit emanates peace. Jesus not only was comforting them to receive but to impress upon them saying, “My peace I give to you.”
The word peace in Hebrew is so much deeper than the peace defined in the English language. The word peace in Hebrew, Shalom, indicates completeness, fulfillment, wholeness, harmony, and well-being. Who doesn’t want that?
This Shalom peace not only completes us, brings wholeness, but also helps us to live in peace with those around us. It really makes sense to me now knowing that the enemy comes to rob us of that peace.
If we don’t have peace within, how can we have peace with one another?
When we visited Israel, this common greeting came forth from our Guide, and from every Jewish restaurant and hotel worker. Everywhere we went Shalom peace was being released from their lips and leaping into my heart.
Where do you need peace today?
Jesus came to bring peace–restore us to a place of peace. Every Christmas we are reminded of this promise. Let’s recall it today asking God to implement this truth inside of us deep. Say it out loud if you need to: “For to us a child is born to us a Son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9: 6
