If you’ve ever experienced a significant loss, there’s that overwhelming feeling of mourning and grief inside, that seems to linger. Give it time; that sorrow will lift. That emptiness will be filled in.
Jeremiah is experiencing that loss as he looks upon Jerusalem’s misery and desolation after the Babylonians ravished it. He expresses that sorrow as he pours out his heart. “The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, her maidens grieve, and she is in bitter anguish. (Lamentation 1: 4)
In His deep lamenting over the city in ruins, Jeremiah cries, “My eyes fail from weeping. I am in torment within, my heart is poured out on the ground because my people are destroyed, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city.” (Lamentations 2: 11)
Jeremiah, a soft and tender-hearted man, looks and weeps through the eyes of the Lord. His deep lament is coming from the Spirit and heart of our God.
- Allow devastation to lead you to a different position.
- See restoration coming even in the midst of your sorrow.
- Learn to look beyond what you are feeling.

Focus On His Majesty
Yes, there is a position we can take, even in a time of significant loss and suffering. After the grieving process, choose to “Speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty and I will meditate on your wonderful works.” (Psalm 145: 4-5)
Focus On His Goodness
Sometimes we have to just remind ourselves, “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made.” (Psalm 145: 8-9)
- He has made you.
- Even if we don’t understand certain outcomes, He is still good.
“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving towards all He has made. (Psalm 145: 13)
Focus On His Closeness
Not only is our God faithful, but He is near. Suffering a loss can make us feel very deserted. Yet, “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” (Psalm 145: 18)
- Keep calling on Him; He’s close by.

We Are Now Sons And Daughters
As a son or daughter of our God, we are heirs of all He owns. That’s a lot! Paul recalls, “Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba Father.” (Galatians 3: 6)
- Abba is the Greek word for Daddy.
- If we feel distant from our God, it’s not Him who withholds His affection, it’s us.
He understands that some have a distorted view of a Daddy because their earthly father didn’t represent our heavenly Father, well. Our heavenly Father wants to be our Daddy in relationship, not just in name only.
- Good Daddy’s want a close relationship.
- Come closer and sit on His lap.
- Children climb up to come closer.
- We, as His children, are never too old to climb up.
- In fact, He calls out saying, “Come up higher.”
If you’re grieving over a loss still, the compassion of our God is saying, “Climb up! Sit with me awhile.”
