Our Best Is Always Enough For Jesus

Our best will always be enough to bring a smile to God’s face.

“The Little Drummer Boy” has been one of my favorite Christmas songs ever since I was a little girl. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to better understand the meaning behind those timeless lyrics, and I have grown to love it that much more!

The song is basically about a little drummer boy who had heard the good news of the birth of our Savior. After hearing this precious news, he was compelled to find Jesus and offer Him the best gift he could scrounge together so that he could honor Him as King.

As we all know, the little drummer boy’s gift wasn’t a physical object, seeing as how he was a poor boy and didn’t have any money. Instead, he gave Jesus the gifts of his time and his talent by playing his drum for Him.

Most people would probably view the little drummer boy’s gift as useless, pointless, or even cheap especially in light of the worldly and materialistic culture that we live in today. But as the song progresses, this little boy’s gift proved to be more than enough to bring a smile to Jesus’ face!

As I was listening to this song the other day, I couldn’t help but smile because even though it’s most likely a fictional song, it still gives us a great glimpse into the heart of our God.

You see, God’s greatest desire for us is that we’d get to the place in our lives where we want to offer Him our best. And He wants us to get to the place where we know without a doubt that the best we have to give will always be enough for Him.

Our best will always be enough to bring a smile to God’s face!

God already knows what each and every one of us has or doesn’t have to offer Him. He knows what our schedules and our bank accounts look like. He knows what our talents and our abilities look like. He knows what our strengths and our weaknesses look like. (He’s the One who gave them to us, after all!) And yet, what He’s most concerned with is what our hearts look like.

He wants to know if we are willing to give Him our best — if we’re willing to give Him our everything! Not so much giving in a physical sense, but giving Him our hearts.

Instead of looking down on ourselves and feeling like we don’t have all that much to offer God because we don’t have as much money as other people, we don’t have as many gifts and talents as other people do, or maybe we just don’t have as much spare time as other people have, why not focus on what we DO have and what we CAN give?

It doesn’t matter who we are or where we’re at in life, we ALL have something we can give to the Lord. We just have to take the time and make the effort to give it. But before we will ever come to that place in our lives, we must first view Jesus as our true King — a King who is worthy to be honored by the best we have to give.

It makes me think of the story of the poor widow in Mark 12:41-44, who gave the last 2 coins she had to her name to the Lord. The passages in Mark recounting this story say this:

“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling His disciples to Him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on’.”

In the eyes of the world, this poor widow’s gift probably seemed useless, pointless, and even cheap. But in the eyes of our Lord, it was more than enough because it was the best she had to offer!

The best we have to offer will differ from person to person, but this Christmas season, let’s all commit to giving Jesus our best — let’s commit to giving Him our hearts. And as we give Him our hearts, let our hands follow quickly after, doing whatever it is that He calls us to do.

What is it that God is asking you to do for Him or for someone else this holiday season? Don’t let doubt, busyness, or the fear of inadequacy keep you from giving all you have to the Lord. He will use your gifts (whether it’s time, money, or talents) in ways you can never imagine!

And remember my friend, your best will always be enough for Jesus.

About the Author

My name is Tarah Peacock and I am blessed to call myself a daughter of the King of all kings! My greatest desire in this life that God has given me is to point as many people to Him as I possibly can. I surrendered my heart to Him as a 7 year old girl, but I didn't fully begin living for Him until I was about 25. I knew all about Him. I went to church on Sundays. I tried to avoid doing "bad" things. But that was where my relationship and my pursuit of Jesus began and ended. Thankfully, God got ahold of my heart through a song called, "Motions" by Matthew West several years ago and revealed to me that I was, indeed, just going through the motions in my walk with Him. I wasn't growing. I wasn't pursuing Him. And as a result, I wasn't experiencing any real spiritual growth or fruit in my life. I made the commitment to start spending REAL time with Him in prayer and in His Word and my life has never been the same! God is so good and if there's any piece of encouragement that I can offer to anyone reading this right now, it's this: God is patient. He is kind. He loves you so much and no matter where you may be today, just know that He has a purpose and a plan for your life! If you'll take the time to get to know Him, I promise you that He will prove Himself to you and your life will never be the same!
