Open The Floodgates

When God gives us a promise, we must look at it through the eyes of faith, or we won’t see it.

We’ve all heard the prayer for the Lord to open up the floodgates of heaven and pour out blessings.  Do we believe it could happen?

There is a man in our reading that did not believe.  Elisha is proclaiming that flour and barley would be sold at the gate of Samaria.  The officer did not believe it.  His response was, “Could this happen?”  He was looking at the natural, not the supernatural provision that could come from God.

Would he believe what God said through the prophet?  Elisha told the officer, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.”  (2 Kings: 2)

  • When God gives us a promise, we must look at it through the eyes of faith, or we won’t see it.

The officer’s provision was coming, but he couldn’t see it, nor believe it.

  • Don’t let unbelief prevent you from seeing.

Four leprous men, at the entrance of the city gate, go down to the camp of the Arameans.  When they arrive at the camp no one is there.  The camp was abandoned, but all their food,  silver, gold, and their animals were all still there.  What happened?

The Lord caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptians to attack us!”  (2 Kings 7: 5-6)

So they got up, fled and abandoned their tents, their horses and donkeys, and ran for their lives.

  • The Lord often provides in unusual ways.

The four men went into the camp and found all their food.  They ate and drank and carried away silver, gold, and hid everything they plundered.

They go back to the city gatekeepers and share the great news of finding all the stuff.  The king sends the officer to check things out for himself.  The people go back to the camp and start taking more of what’s still left in the abandoned camp. Along the road, they even found clothing and equipment that was dropped along the way while they fled.  It was like a free-for-all in the enemy’s camp and along the road they traveled.

The officer was in charge of the gate, and when the people came through, they trampled on him and he died.

The words of Elisha came to pass.  “You will see it with your own eyes, but not eat of it.”  He saw the provision but couldn’t share in it.

  • Unbelief keeps us from sharing in God’s provision.  (Shared from 2 Kings 7: 3-20, Modified)

Our unbelief can hinder the work of God in our life.  God has given us gifts, but if they are not released in love, they are nothing.

As Paul is teaching the Corinthian believers about spiritual gifts he says this phrase a couple of times, “If I have not love, I am nothing.”

Everything we do for God, every gift, must be released in the most excellent way, in love and with love.

Love will make you go the extra mile when others will stop.

Love will make you patient when others have given up.

Love releases kindness, even when you are wronged.

Love is not self-seeking, it sees the other’s needs first.

Love keeps no record of wrongs.  If we do this folks, we won’t be asking God to help us to forgive!

Love protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres.

Keep loving.  Keep sharing your gifts.  Agape, pure love is the greatest.

(Shared from 1 Corinthians 13, Modified)

It was the love of God that wanted to send Jonah to a godless nation.  It was the love of God that rescued Jonah after he was swallowed by a great fish when trying to run away from him.

Here’s what Jonah said about that rescue:  “You brought my life up from the pit, O Lord my God. Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” (Jonah 2: 6, 8)

It’s His love and grace that opens doors, opens up opportunities, and opens the floodgates of the heavens.
