Is there someone that you are “one in spirit” with? What does that mean? Let’s look at a biblical example.
After David triumphed over Goliath, he went before King Saul and talked at length. David grew in his relationship with Saul, and his son, Jonathan. “Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.” (1 Samuel 18: 1)
Jesus tells us to love one another as ourselves. This relationship between David and Jonathan was a kindred relationship. They were best buddies; but more than that they were loyal, in their relationship. Jonathan displayed this when he “Took off his robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow, and belt.” (1 Samuel 18: 4)
Jonathan knew that David would be the next king. Jonathan would be the appointed king after King Saul, as his son. The act of placing his robe on David and giving him his weapons is an act of loyalty, and submission to his friend, as the soon coming King.
David served Saul in his household, and Saul loved David like a son. He gave him a high rank in his army.
When the people came out to congratulate David and Saul for the victory of Goliath, they sang, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” (1 Samuel 18: 7)
When Saul heard the numbers being mentioned, he became angry because they credited David to tens of thousands and with him only thousands.
- Don’t get too caught up in worrying about the “numbers.”
How foolish, I thought, that Saul would be jealous of his friend, the one he loved. Saul apparently had some insecurity issues. Here’s what I learned from this:
- We need not compare ourselves with anyone else.
- We may become “mad” with jealousy.
- This madness is orchestrated by evil spirits.
The scripture clearly says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice.” (Romans 12: 15)
- Being “one in spirit” with another should reflect celebrating the other.
- Being “one in spirit” reflects Godly unity.
Scripture says, “From that time on, Saul kept a jealous eye on David.” (1 Samuel 18: 9) Saul probably knew the kingdom would be David’s soon.
The following day, Saul was being tormented by the evil spirit and David was playing his harp, like usual. This time, Saul took his spear and hurled it at him, but it missed him.
- Walking close with God can enable you to miss the jabbing spears from the enemy.
- You may have keen discernment when they are being shot at you, too.
Saul was so very jealous of David that he sends him away giving him command over a thousand men. I wondered about Saul and the number of men given if Saul was demoting him from slaying “tens of thousands,” as the people sang about previously. Just a thought!
He actually wanted David to be killed in battle, but it gave him greater fame. Here’s how successful:
- Everything David did he had great victories.
- All of Israel and Judah loved David.
- David’s name became well known.
Saul’s (Satans’) plans were to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.
- Yes, Satan sometimes has a scheme behind people for our demise.
- Satan often uses those we love and are close with to be a foothold for the devil.
- Ask God for discernment–He will expose and shine His light upon wicked schemes and uncover them.
- One of the names of the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.
Saul devises a plan for David to marry his daughter, Michal. He now becomes his son-in-law, but in his heart, he was an enemy. “Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.” (1 Samuel 18: 29)

We are one in Spirit with the Lord. Whatever we go through, we can know He is close. “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” (Psalm 63: 8)
- Only the Spirit can help us to sing in times of sorrow or times of adversity.

Do we ignore what’s in our conscience? Nope. If it’s enlightened by the Holy Spirit it’s very reliable!
Paul wrote, “I speak the truth in Christ–I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 9: 1)
- When truth speaks, our conscience will know it, as a believer.
Our spirit, which is alive in the Holy Spirit, will discern what’s true, sincere, and authentic. Being alive in the Holy Spirit, affects all areas in our life–wisdom and discernment become heightened. (Shared from Romans 9: 1-29, Paraphrased)
