One Body

When I hit 40, I think I had an epiphany that I only get one body, and it was high time I started taking that more seriously.  I started reflecting on the fact that God made me in His image.

I’ve never been an athlete. I’ve always enjoyed being active, but I’m about as coordinated as a 4-month old puppy who’s learning how to maneuver its body atop all of those long, lanky legs. On that note, I have been doing kickboxing for the past four years now, and I have developed a level of confidence that actually surprises me.

It started out as the search for a fast workout that would challenge me and give me the most bang for my buck. After lots of persistence, I developed the endurance and strength that I would have never thought possible for a low-energy person like myself. I’ll tell you one thing: all those round kicks, hooks, and burpees will make one reconsider that cookie (bag of cookies in my case) or (giant) bowl of banana pudding.

When I hit 40, I think I had an epiphany that I only get one body, and it was high time I started taking that more seriously. I started reflecting on the fact that God made me in His image, and I can only assume that His image is a magnificent one! Unfortunately, this broken world has left our bodies in a less-than-magnificent state, prone to disease and deterioration. If we honored God in everything that we do (the way we should), we would be much more conscious of what we put into our bodies and how we maintain them.

I have no idea what God intends for the remainder of my life, but I want to be healthy enough to live, love, and enjoy all that He has for me. I suppose that means I’ll be back in the gym tomorrow, sweating it out and simply being thankful that I have the strength to do one more (cursed) burpee!
