Jesus is the Lion of Judah! In my research I’ve discovered there are two places in scripture where the lion and Judah come together. One of them is in Revelation. “Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5: 5
So, what is the significance of the tribe of Judah? Judah was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. To simplify, the descendants of these sons formed the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus was a descendant of Judah which also included David, and Solomon, eventually making its way all the way down to Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father.
In Genesis 49, Jacob is blessing and prophesying over his sons, and when he gets to Judah, he promises Judah that “His brothers will praise him and that they will bow down to him. Jacob also tells Judah, “You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?” Genesis 49: 9
Jacob says that “In the future the scepter and ruler’s staff will not depart from Judah “until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be His.”. Genesis 49: 10 This messianic prophecy points forward to the second coming of the Lord Jesus, the descendant of Judah who will rule the earth. Revelation 19: 11-16.
Whatever we go through, we shall triumph and prevail because Jesus, our Lion of Judah has. The lamb of God has become the Lion of Judah.
One commentary said this: “A Lion is a fitting image of our Messiah, “1. For the excellency of his strength. 2. For his heroical spirit. 3. For his principality, the lion is the king of beasts. 4. For his vigilance, the lion sleeps with open eyes.”
