Keep Moving Forward: Perspectives of a Curvy Trainer

I get up and I do it again, because I know it’s still doing something great for my body and that scale doesn’t define me!

Posted on

This I know about myself, I can do hard things! I lift, I run, I jump, I freaking burpee!

Yet, I beat myself up and disqualify myself from things because I haven’t met some standard. That number on the scale is still not small enough!

I also know for a fact that the number on that square piece of glass in my bathroom does not reflect my worth! So, why do I allow it to limit what I can and cannot do?

I’ve come to realize that I can be a personal trainer while I’m still working on myself as well! I am not there yet, but I have been working dang hard for years to get there! And I am fitter and healthier than 98% of people out there, I do hard cross-training workouts five times a week and have amazing healthy bloodwork!

I just happen to be a 5’1 thick and curvy (I prefer the term fun-sized) forty-something woman who dreams big dreams and has so much to give! I want to inspire and motivate people to be all that God has created them to be and to live life to the fullest! Enjoy it! Live fearlessly!

This is me: I am Italian, so bread and pasta are part of my DNA. I’m also Texan, so tacos and queso are also part of my way of life! I enjoy food and it’s a part of how I socialize. Coffee with friends, dinner with my husband, ice cream with the kids . . . not all the time of course!

But short and thick means even the special occasions tend to stick around for longer than they should.

My husband had been a group fitness and motivational coach for years, and we recently bought a Snap Fitness franchise and boy have I felt the pressure to “look the part!” There are still times I want to run and hide because I just know I don’t fit the picture. Man is that ever hard!

There were years that I just stayed away, so his clients didn’t see his “fat wife.” Two years ago, I decided I wasn’t going to hide anymore, I really wanted to be a part of what he was doing, and I wanted to be healthy and fit again. So, I began to attend his cross-training classes regularly; averaging about three times a week and boy was it hard!

Now I’m averaging 5-6 times a week and some days I work out twice a day. Even with that, I still struggle to lose weight! Have I thought about quitting? Yes. Have I cried to this man who can now empathize with his female clients who struggle to lose a pound? Yes, ma’am.

Guess what? I get up and I do it again, because I know it’s still doing something great for my body and that scale doesn’t define me! My arms are more muscular, my legs have no more cellulite! And I can lift a heavy barbell! I am still motivated because even though I do want to lose more weight, there’s more to it than that.

Rocky is one of my favorite movies. Do you know why? Because Rocky was average. He was a regular guy that no one thought would go anywhere. He was given a chance and he did what no one thought he would do. He went 12 rounds with the champ. He kept getting back up, after getting knocked down. And he inspired people!

That brings Proverbs 24:16 to mind, a righteous man falls seven times, but he gets back up over and over again. He never gives up!

One of my goals is to look the part; to look as fit as I feel! I’m not there yet, but I will be soon! I want to invite my clients to do the journey with me. I am still moving forward, and never going to stop!

Ultimately, I want my physical and spiritual coaching to be about motivating people to continue to grow in life. To never be satisfied with where they are and to keep moving forward, to grow, to change, to move closer to your goals, health, fitness, spiritual, and life.
