Jesus’ appearance on the earth was significant for each of us in many ways. His life was an example for us. His death and resurrection opened the way for us to enjoy eternal life. And He’s coming back again to set up His kingdom. And of course, while we are living in this life, we can’t forget, Jesus really does want to be your friend.
The last time John saw Jesus was as He ascended back toward heaven. Many years had passed since John had seen Him. Their reunion is recorded in the Book of Revelation.
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.” Revelation 1:17- 18
I have a good friend who I have known since our Bible School days. His name is Lenny. Well, since those days Lenny has advanced and gotten a master’s degree, then his doctorate, and now he is the president of a worldwide university.
To many, he is Dr. Gary Seevers. And even though I respect his accomplishments, and his position, to me he is still Lenny. Let’s compare that to the relationship John had with Jesus. John was an apostle of Jesus, and he was a part of Jesus’ inner circle, along with his brother James and friend, Peter.
John Was Close To Jesus
An incident happened once during the time when Jesus was with His disciples. John found himself in the middle of an argument as to who would be the greatest in God’s kingdom. Being one of His closest friends, John wanted special recognition.
John Worshiped Jesus
No, he fell to the ground and worshiped him. Jesus however, put a hand on John’s shoulder and said, “don’t be afraid, it’s me, I’m the one who died and I’m alive forevermore.” In Hebrews 13:8 it says, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. I believe at that moment Jesus was giving John that assurance.
John had a personal encounter with Jesus. We can too, that is just as powerful.
Just like He was a friend to John, Jesus really does want to be your friend as well. But before that can happen, you must recognize him as your Lord. Then receive him as your Savior, because when He died on the cross, He did it for you.
Now take another look at today’s verse, especially the last 2 sentences. They are certainly words of encouragement for us all.
I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.” Revelation 1:18
Lord, we are looking forward to spending eternity with you. There are times in this life that we feel all alone. Thank you that we can rely on you as our friend.
