Have you ever prayed for increase? I have! When we pray for increase our God is praying for increase as well. He’s desiring us to increase in all areas but especially love.
Paul prayed for the Thessalonian church saying, “May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as our does for you.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 12)
The next verse shows what happens when we experience His increase. “He strengthens our hearts and we become blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all His holy ones.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 13)
- Letting His love increase in our hearts will strengthen us, and we will overflow to others.
- Letting His love increase makes us more like Him, holy.

Increase of God’s Presence
Even in the oracles and prophecies against the nations, I found these treasures. “Men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel. They will not look to the altars, the work of their hands, and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles and the incense altars their fingers made.” (Isaiah 18: 7)
Here’s another, “Gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the Name of the Lord Almighty.” (Isaiah 18: 7)
Finally, “When they (Egypt) cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them. They will turn to the Lord and he will respond to their pleas and heal them.” (Isaiah 19: 20, 22)
- Remember, Egypt was the place of bondage, the place of captivity. When we turn to the Lord, the Savior, we turn away from captivity and receive freedom.
Part of this prophecy has already come to pass. In the fourth century, the great theologian Athanasius wrote this from Egypt: “The thing is happening before our very eyes, here in Egypt; and thereby another prophecy is fulfilled” (Grogan)
- When we experience His presence, an increase occurs.

Increase And Overflow Is Still God’s Desire
His desire is that all people would repent and turn/return to Him so they could be set free. “God’s grace often comes to the very worst of men.” (Spurgeon)
The redemption that comes from the Lord is always available. His grace never stops flowing to us. His lovingkindness is better than life.
“Tremble at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool the hard rock into springs of water.” (Psalm 114: 7-8)
- Our God is a God of increase and overflow. What He pours out is too plentiful to keep to ourselves.
- His provision is miraculous.
- Water from a rock is no small miracle.
- When He provides, it’s more than enough.
