How can we explain a sudden wind gust upon us? We can hear it, we can feel it, but we cannot explain where it comes from. The wind blowing is a natural current of air blowing from a particular direction.
Have you tried to explain the wind of the Spirit blowing?
Jesus was explaining this to Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader, who sought out Jesus in the darkness of the night. Apparently, he didn’t want anyone to know he was searching and seeking.
Folks who are searching will walk through the darkness to reach the Light.
Nicodemus had questions about being born again and wanted Jesus to explain. Jesus replied, “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” John 3: 8
One commentary explained it this way:
“You don’t have to understand everything about the wind, but you see its effects.”
That is just how it is with the birth of the Spirit.
Jesus wanted Nicodemus to know that he didn’t have to understand everything about the new birth before he experienced it.
Don’t let those unanswered questions draw you away from God. Be like Nicodemus and go to the One who has all the answers–Jesus.
Experiential knowledge is still knowledge.
“Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.” 1 Corinthians 8: 2
HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND? When we want answers, go to Jesus first.
