How Are You Doing?

Years ago, I was sitting in my office and I heard a delivery man come in with some mail. Our receptionist asked him the general greeting question, “How are you today?”

He laughed and replied, “It’s too early to tell.”

I thought that was a clever and comical comeback, and I wondered at what time during the day would he know how he was doing. Was he waiting on something good or bad to happen before the judgment could be made? What a bummer to have to wait on circumstances or, worst yet, a person to cast the deciding vote on how you are doing.

And then after a little more pondering, I thought it’s kind of sad that many times we live this way. We allow the day to tell us how we are instead of telling the day how we are doing.

Rolling this thought around in my head, it became very clear to me that how I’m doing is a choice. It’s a matter of choosing whose “report” will I believe.

The Lord clearly tells me how I’m doing every day—no matter what! There are some eternal truths concerning my status that circumstances cannot alter.

For starters, I’m loved with an infinite love by the Creator of the universe. I am more than a conqueror. I have been given abundant life. I am an overcomer. I have been given wisdom, power, and love. I’ve been given a new nature as a child of the Most High. He promises to help me, guide me, and lead me into all truth.

So, if I’m asked how I’m doing, from this report, the answer is “I’m doing pretty doggone good!” This is good news. That is glad tidings!

The challenge is that, at times, we assess how we are doing based on our circumstances.

The Word has an answer for everything. Romans 12:2 tells us this victorious type of thinking comes ONE way. We must renew our mind to greater truth and not rely on facts of what we see and feel to determine our day.

So, the next time we are tempted to judge our day, run it through the grid of truth. Unlike the thinking of the delivery man, it’s never too early to decide. Choose today. Choose now.

We have been made victorious through Christ. He is good, kind, and gentle.

Boldly declare with the Psalmist, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psa. 118:24, KJV).

Happy a great day! 😉
