He Mends The Broken Heart

When the brothers arrived, Joseph told the steward of the house to prepare a meal and bring the brothers into his house to share his meal with them.

In brokenness, God is near.  “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”  (Psalm 34: 18 )

Continuing our story with Joseph, we learn that the brothers return back to Joseph with their younger brother, Benjamin.  They come bearing gifts and more silver to give to Joseph.

Israel (Jacob) their father, had been so reluctant to send the youngest, for fear of losing him, too.  He probably was still mourning the loss of Joseph, who he thought was dead.

  • What we think is dead and gone, God can still resurrect.

When the brothers arrived, Joseph told the steward of the house to prepare a meal and bring the brothers into his house to share his meal with them.

  • Joseph was preparing his house for them to have a re-established fellowship, once again.
  • Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many rooms…I go to prepare a place for you.”  (John 14: 2)
  • He is making preparations for us to meet and be with those missed loved ones who are in the Father’s heavenly house.

The invitation was frightening to the brothers and they were uncomfortable with his kindness.  They were telling the steward that their silver had been returned to them, thinking they were guilty of something.  Yet, the steward of the house reassures them not to be afraid. He tells them, “Your God, the God of your Father has given you treasure in your sacks.”  (Genesis 43: 23)

  • Extending kindness is a hidden treasure that is released.  That’s why “Kindness matters!”

So they came into the house and feasted with Joseph.

  • A table has been set before us, in the presence of our enemies…They were now not enemies, they were brothers.
  • Pure relationships shall be restored.

Behind the scenes, God is preparing things and preparing people’s hearts.

When Jesus had died, it was the women who “Took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.”  (Luke 24: 1)  They were to prepare the body for burial.

When they arrived at the tomb they were greeted by angels asking, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?  He is not here; He has risen!”  (Luke 24: 5)  Hallelujah Christ has risen!

So the women run back to the place where the disciples were and tell of all the things they saw at the tomb.  “But they did not believe…”  (Luke 24: 11)

They had forgotten what Jesus had been telling them while on the earth about his death and resurrection.  “Then they remembered His words.”  (Luke 24: 8)

  • Sometimes we may not understand or even accept what God is saying or doing; then one day, we will remember.
  • God remembered Joseph and his loss.
  • God remembers our losses and He is very near to us. Let’s remember His promises in that time of loss.
  • His Words mend and heal a broken heart.

(Psalm 34,  Genesis 43, Luke 24: 1-12, Paraphrased & Modified)
