Happy Thanksgiving: Cultivating a Thankful Heart

Thankfulness is both a life-changer and a life-giver.

Posted on

As I was preparing to write this, the below lyrics flowed through my mind:

Count your blessings

Name them one by one

Count your many blessings

See what God has done

One Thanksgiving Day a few years ago, I took a walk before the day’s preparations for our family feast began. As I enjoyed the brisk fall morning, I purposed to think of 100 things I was thankful for before I returned to the warm comfort of my mother-in-law’s home. To some readers, it will come as no surprise that this walk proved to be a huge life-filling highlight of my day.

Thankfulness is both a life-changer and a life-giver. As one who is sold out for the Lord, it is not lost on me that EVERY SINGLE THING I mentally listed as I walked through that suburban neighborhood is and was from the hand of God.

To those reading this who are more “thankful-challenged,” consider this a gentle encouragement to try this, or something similar, for yourself. Most nights, as I wait for sleep to come, I think of 25 things I am thankful for from my day. Of course, 25 is not a special number, but it is high enough that it forces me out of noticing only the obvious blessings and puts me in the search-and-hunt mode to see all the many ways God is working in my life.

“Every gift God freely gives us is good and perfect, streaming down from the Father of lights, who shines from the heavens with no hidden shadow or darkness and is never subject to change.”
‭‭James (Jacob)‬ ‭1‬:‭17‬ ‭TPT‬‬

“My soul, bless the Lord, and do not forget all his benefits.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭103‬:‭2‬ ‭CSB‬‬

On this day set apart by our Nation’s forefathers to give thanks for our Creator’s blessings over us, I encourage you to take some time to Count your blessings and name them one by one. Take a few minutes to count your many blessings and really see all the many things that God has done in your life and your family’s life.

Blessings over you and yours as you enjoy this day of giving thanks!

When upon life’s billows

You are tempest tossed

When you are discouraged

Thinking all is lost

Count your many blessings

Name them one by one

And it will surprise you

What the lord has done

Count your blessings

Name them one by one

Count your blessings

See what God has done

Are you ever burdened

With a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy

You are called to bear?

Count your many blessings

Every doubt will fly

And you will keep singing

As the days go by

So, amid the conflict

Whether great or small

Do not be disheartened

God is over all

Count your many blessings

Angels will attend

Help and comfort give you

To your journey’s end

See what God has done

Count your blessings

Name them one by one

Count your many blessings

See what God has done
