God’s Great Goodness

God brings wonder and joy with each new sunrise.

As we end one year and begin another, let’s look at the goodness of our God. Let’s not just look at His goodness but His great goodness.

That’s why I entitled this God’s, Great Goodness.

Whether your year was a good one or a not-so-good one, lift your eyes to the hills with me and focus on His goodness.  One place we can go to is Psalm 65, which speaks of the bounty and abundance of our good God.  Within this Psalm is a hymn of praise that describes His goodness.

How does the Psalmist recount God’s goodness?

  • He answers our prayers and draws us to Himself.

” We will fulfill our vows to you, for you answer our prayers. All of us must come to you.”  Psalm 65: 2

  • He pardons our sins so we can enjoy good fellowship with Him.

Though we are overwhelmed by our sins, you forgive them all. What joy for those you choose to bring near…”Psalm 65: 3-4

  • He orders the affairs of the world and brings hope to all.

“You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas. You formed the mountains by your power and armed yourself with mighty strength. You quieted the raging oceans with their pounding waves and silenced the shouting of the nations. “Psalm 65: 5-7

  • He brings wonder and joy with each new sunrise.

“Those who live at the ends of the earth stand in awe of your wonders. From where the sun rises to where it sets, you inspire shouts of joy.”  Psalm 65: 8

  • He turns our earth into a beautiful garden, like Eden.

“You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. The river of God has plenty of water; it provides a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered it so. You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops.” Psalm 65: 9-10

Can we now see why the author of this Psalm calls God’s goodness great?

As we conclude, here’s the final verse that is my favorite.  It’s a promise that we can hold on to in 2023:

“You crown the year with your goodness and your paths drip with abundance.”  Psalm 65: 11, NKJ

Let it be so, Lord Jesus.

One translation says it this way:  “You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.” Psalm 65: 11, NLT

Whatever hardships we may encounter, God still provides an overflowing abundance by crowning our year with His goodness, His great goodness.
