Isaiah the prophet wrote about our ability to think we know better than God when it comes to discerning truth. He wrote “How foolish can you be? He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay! Should the created thing say of the one who made it, “He didn’t make me”? Does a jar ever say, ‘The potter who made me is stupid?’”(Isaiah 29:16).
We need to take that verse and walk through the worldview we are being asked to accept as truth and examine its validity through the lens of God’s word. Because the creator God is not stupid, He made no mistakes. He never turned the reins of definition over to humans to decide what is true. Only the Word and Spirit working together can reveal truth.
We live in a culture that increasingly represents God as a deity who lives in submission to our will, not His. This false god created in the image of human nature will lead us into spiritual deception, physical and emotional mutilation, the theft of childhood, and every bizarre concept of reality that darkness can create.
Popular in our culture today are two words – inclusive and accepting. For many, these two words have been defined apart from the boundaries of Scripture and opened the barn door to every bizarre version of deception – deceptions unimagined only a few short years ago. For millennia, Scripture has been the only safe place where the nature of God and His opinion about life could be discovered and trusted. He is the potter of truth, not the lump of clay still being formed.
The Lord knew people that in the future people would be tempted to follow doctrines of demons and reinterpretations of truth, masking those reinterpretations as an inclusive and accepting faith, which at its core is an affront to a holy God. The apostle Paul warned us “to not be influenced when people try to trick with lies so clever, they sound like the truth” (Ephesians 4: 14). God is not stupid, nor will He be mocked or change His nature no matter how far down a dark rabbit hole of deception a culture, and sadly, some in the Church have descended when following a god of their own design – a truly stupid god.
