Glue and Sawdust

The vast majority of the world anchors its faith in wealth, intelligence, self-gratification…glue and sawdust, if you will. Yet God is far from glue and sawdust; He’s a giant Redwood towering above the earth with unfathomable strength and majesty.

In trying to decide what to make out of my first blog post, I thought about something that happened at work a couple weeks ago and I realized the analogy was right on time. I work as a dental hygienist at a community health center; needless to say, we don’t have top of the line anything in our office. That’s all well and good though because we are still able to adequately treat our patients with skill and compassion.

That being said, I had a patient seated in the chair last week and I was attempting to pull some gloves from the box on my cabinet when the entire cabinet—hinges and all— fell off the side of the unit. It most certainly scared the dickens out of me, but thankfully my patient wasn’t seated facing the direction of said disaster so she was left unscathed. I, however, was left trying to hold up a large cabinet and yelling for a coworker to come help me.

When I was finally able to assess the stupid thing, I discovered that the screws that had “secured” it into the unit were about four times shorter than necessary. Really?!? Not only that, but the stripped holes from which the screws were ejected were splintered with cheap particle board. Wow. So much quality in one place is just more than one person can handle. It did get me thinking, though, about faith, sawdust, glue, and what holds it all together…in life and in furniture.

The screws are my faith, plain and simple. Are they strong enough to support the heavy load that has and will inevitably come my way in life? Heavy stuff to ponder (bad pun intended). The particle board is the who or what in which I anchor my faith. Yet God is far from glue and sawdust; He’s a giant Redwood towering above the earth with unfathomable strength and majesty. The vast majority of the world anchors its faith in wealth, intelligence, self-gratification…glue and sawdust, if you will.

If we’re being honest here, I’ll admit that my screws haven’t always been long enough to be anchored into the giant Redwood. I’ve come to discover that every trial, every tear, and every twinge of hurt that I endure adds a new dimension to my faith, eventually leading me to complete reliance on the strength of the One who created the Redwood. So in case of another fiasco, I have nowhere to fall but into His arms.
