Four Gardens

May the importance and beauty of these gardens encourage you and lift you up.

So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

Genesis 3:24 (NASB)

They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.”

Mark 14:32 (NASB)

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

John 19:41-42 (NASB)

Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Revelation 22:1-2 (NASB)

We are well into spring; summer isn’t that far away now. There are odd days when the sun is shining warmly on our wee garden patio, interspersed with some cooler days. I look forward to sitting out in the summer evenings, watching the swifts in the blue sky as it gets darker and the swifts are replaced by bats. It is such a peaceful place in those moments. All this talk of gardens was inspired by an article written by Mervyn Wishart called The Voice of God, found in Precious Seed Magazine.

Brother Mervyn draws a fitting contrast between the Garden of Eden and the Garden Tomb, the first being “the garden of defeat and failure” and the second being “the garden of victory and triumph.” Even when I had finished the excellent article, my mind kept going back to that paragraph about the gardens – it had touched my heart. As I pondered the subject further, I found four gardens worthy of meditation in the Bible, the first being Eden already mentioned. The second one is the Garden of Gethsemane, where after the last supper, our Lord retreated in great anguish to pray with His Father – it was the garden of prayer. The next garden is where our Lord’s lifeless body was interred after His crucifixion and where He defeated death and gained victory over sin – Hallelujah! The fourth and final garden is Heaven, where the beauty of Eden will be eclipsed, and the redeemed of God will bow before Him in praise and adoration – it is the garden of eternal reward.

Dear Reader, may the importance and beauty of these gardens encourage you and lift you up. Let us rejoice in the Holy victory over sin and death as we look forward to Heaven’s Garden someday.
