Focussed on Christ

It occurred to me how much little old me could achieve for God’s Kingdom if I had the full weight of His Word and Peace.

For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:5 (NASB)

Here we are on Monday morning, and I want to share a hymn from church yesterday. I love worshipping the Lord in song, even though I am the first to say that I can’t sing for toffee. Every so often a hymn hits a cord in my heart; this Lord’s day it was the well known hymn “May The Mind of Christ My Saviour.” It was written by Kate B. Wilkinson (1859-1928), who was a member of the Church of England involved in ministry to young girls.

In it’s first four verses we are encouraged to seek the indwelling benefits of the Triune God in our lives; the mind of Christ, the Word of God, the Peace of God and, the Love of Jesus. For me it was particularly the words of verses two and three that touched my heart:

2 May the word of God dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour,
So that all may see I triumph
Only through his pow’r.

3 May the peace of God, my Father,
Rule my life in ev’rything,
That I may be calm to comfort
Sick and sorrowing.

It occurred to me how much little old me could achieve for God’s Kingdom if I had the full weight of His Word and Peace. I realized this depends upon how much time and prayer I give in His Word; through its complete application all things are possible. In our ardour for the Divine, we are hampered by the world, the desires and weaknesses of our flesh. Our battle against such is a lifelong war of attrition, in which we must turn away from temptations seeking the things of His Spirit.

Dear Reader, may the mind of Christ your Saviour, guide you each day. May you hold tightly to the loving gifts of God, seeking to serve Him in whatever He asks of you. Let us, with glad voices, sing the last verse of today’s great hymn of faith:

5 May we run the race before us,
Strong and brave to face the foe,
Looking only unto Jesus
As we onward go.
