Finding Provision in Praise

God’s promises are rich and pure. He keeps them all.

Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

Psalm 47:6 NKJV

Anxious thoughts and an unsteady heart propelled me to my quiet place on the porch. Sitting in the old, paint-peeled rocking chair, I slowly began rocking as I opened my Bible. I plead with God to give me the words to pray because I felt empty.

My husband was walking into yet another job interview––this time several states away. I lost count of how many he had gone through in the past year. Having the door shut so often left me questioning God’s presence in the situation. I begged Him to fill me with peace and assurance.

Opening my Bible to Psalm 47, I quietly began reading aloud. God whispered to me in verse 4 and shouted by verse 6. “Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!” (NKJV)

What, God? My thoughts raced to understand.

Was He promising that this was the job that would rescue us from financial hardship, relieving our tension and anxiety? After all, I had to have a reason to praise, right?

The Holy Spirit guided me back to Psalm 47:4: “He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.” (NKJV)

I recognized this was referring to God’s promise to give the Land of Canaan to Israel. His beloved children.

So where does that leave me?

After some moments of pondering, I realized that this same promise applies to me. As His child––through salvation––I find my inheritance in Him.

What does it mean to have an inheritance chosen by God––the God of the universe––the same God who created heaven and earth? (Genesis 1:1) Simply, it means everything! God has an endless supply and because I am His child what is His is mine.

As I thought of God’s sustaining power over those previous months, how by His grace we had lacked nothing, my prayer became praise. Tears flowed as praise brought peace; peace in knowing that God was in control whatever the outcome.

God’s promises are rich and pure. He keeps them all. We can rest in His ability to supply our needs surrendering to His will, way, and timing because He cares for His children.

It was a few months later before my husband received a job––one he didn’t apply for after being asked to take an unannounced position.

I praised God for the opportunity, but I’m most thankful for the lessons learned in the months of hardship leading up to it. It was in the struggle that I found God’s provision in praise.

Friend, I’d like to remind you that as a child of God your inheritance is in the Lord. “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 ESV) May you find peace as you praise Him for His promises.

Prayer

Dear Father,

As we cry for You to meet our needs, help us to remember what You have already done. Remind us that our inheritance is found in You and assure us of Your endless supply. We praise You for provision. Please help us to praise You even while we wait.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
