Defining Our Calling

Defining our calling does not define us.

Posted on

Defining our calling is not about finding our identity. It is about knowing God’s purpose for our lives in that particular season.

Shame Rx:

Defining our calling does not define us.

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus”

(2 Timothy 1:9 NLT).

Defining Our Calling—His Calling

It can be easy to look to a calling as the answer to our insecurities or longing for identity. We can simply want to find our place in this world. But our calling does not define us. God does. And His purpose goes far beyond mere duty or self-esteem.

Defining Our Calling—His Glory

While it might seem odd at first, our calling is not actually about us. But we get to participate in God’s plan, and ultimately it is all about Him and His glory. When we are tempted to feel shame because we feel like we should have achieved more in this life, we need to remember that once our calling is clear, it is not intended to be a final destination.

Defining Our Calling—His Will

We live our calling out of a relationship with God, and we are free to rise above shame about that position or calling because we are merely servants doing His will. When we surrender our will, we let go of shame regarding our calling. It was never about us in the first place.

All callings on this earth are temporary, but only one calling lasts forever.

So, how are we defined? By the grace of God. When we accept His calling on our life, we are defined as a child of God—the most important calling on earth.
