Conducting A Royal Priesthood

Learn to stay in that place of solitude when you need to.

Imagine a precious young boy child clutching his Bible.  I saw a picture of this and it spoke volumes to me.   It shouldn’t surprise us why Jesus told us to become like little children.  There was such a purity and innocence displayed in this little guy’s devotion.  I smiled from ear to ear when I saw the photo.  Jesus probably did too!

As we read in the Old Testament, God had some serious rules for his people, especially the priests.  As I read through them, He is continually telling them not to entertain evil.  One specific thing that stuck out to me was the importance of not consulting a Psychic for our future. The church is even ignorant of this practice.  The Bible is very clear about this.  God has said, “I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.”  (Leviticus 20: 6)

I did not know that this was wrong in my before Christ days.  I’ve asked the Lord to forgive me, and He has. If you have dabbled in this, repent and turn from it.

  • Don’t mess with the demonic.  Stay away from it.

In Biblical days, folks would consult mediums to get some answers about things.  Even today, there are television talk shows filled with people wanting to know about their deceased loved ones, to see if they are ok.  Their intentions may be innocent, but it’s dangerous to go there.  So, they consult a medium to speak to that loved one who is dead.

God clearly said, “Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead.  I am the Lord your God.”  (Leviticus 19: 31)

The High Priest wasn’t even allowed to enter a place where a dead body was, because he had been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. (Leviticus 21: 12)  They had to be holy to their God.

The amazing thing I read in the New Testament is that God calls us, Christ-followers, “A chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”  (1 Peter 2: 9)

We are told, “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.”  (Proverbs 30: 5)

Learn to stay in that place of solitude when you need to.  Jesus had just heard of the death of John The Baptist, and “He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.”  (Matthew 14: 13)  He needed to be alone for a while, to grieve.  Yet, He saw the crowds had followed him.  In His love and compassion, He came to them and healed the sick.

His disciples were concerned, seeing that it was getting late.  They wanted to send the people away to eat, but Jesus said, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”   (Matthew 14: 16)  Jesus knew they were hungry, spiritually.

  • How hungry are we for the things of God?  “Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”  (John 6: 35)
  • Discipleship will take us to another level of feeding the hungry.  He instructed them to feed His sheep and lambs. “Jesus said to Peter, Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?  Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you.  Jesus then said, “Feed my lambs.   Take care of my sheep”  (John 21: 15-16)

Being hungry for the things of God will take you places you’ve never thought possible.  It will stretch you and press you forward into new levels of courage and loving on people, and can even lead you into seeing the miraculous.

Jesus broke the loaves, gave thanks, and then, “He gave them to the disciples and the disciples gave them to the people.”  (Matthew 14: 19)  Yes, they participated in the miracles, their own hands dispersed them.  Jesus blessed what they were going to reproduce, as He was conducting a royal priesthood.

  • Discipleship is all about reproducing and multiplying.

(Leviticus 20-21, Proverbs 30, Matthew 14: 1-21, Modified)
